It’s getting warmer out there … which means many things. One of them is that it’s high time to chuck your heavy winter foundations in favor of something lighter, less smothering, and preferably the kind of simple one-step product that you can just smooth on and go. This is not the time to be painstakingly dotting concealer on every little blemish — that’s what the other 9 months of the year are for. For one less thing to worry about, grab one of these 5 light, multitasking base products, toss ‘em in your beach bag, and go! Keep reading »
I came really late to the powder foundation game. I remember all these girls way back in high school with their little Cover Girl compacts. But me, I’ve usually kicked it old school with regular foundation and then set it with powder. Why I did this, I don’t know. It involved twice as many brushes to get dirty and I’ve never really liked the flaky way powder sits on my skin.
But I think that’s all changed now with the new powder foundation I’ve been using from Drew Barrymore’s Flower line with Walmart. I’ve already kvelled about her Flower lip butter. Turns out that I’m also a big fan of her creamy powder foundation. My fabulous Beauty Test Drive pal Winona claims “obsessed” with her Jane Iredale powder foundation — but Flower’s powder foundation does not come with the same $52 price tag! Keep reading »
The story of how I came to own Jane Iredale mineral powder foundation goes something like this: I met my friend Aileen for dinner and as soon as I saw her flawless skin I shrieked, “Oh my god what makeup are you wearing please teach me to make my face look like your face!”
“It’s Jane Iredale powder foundation,” she replied. “It’s the best.”
So a few days later we went to a local beauty shop and I accidentally spent my life savings on Jane Iredale products. The purple eyeshadow I picked up was a bit of a disappointment, but this mineral foundation? That’s a whole different story… Keep reading »
“I just bought my first primer and I was so excited to use it, but then I realized I don’t actually know how to use it. Does it go on before or after my concealer? What about moisturizer? My daily regimen includes sunscreen, concealer, powder, and now primer. Could you help me figure out the order in which I should be putting all these products on my face? Thanks so much!” – Primed For Greatness
Oh, Primed For Greatness, you have so much to learn! But not to worry, you have a lot of potential, too — there are plenty of makeup newbies who begrudge the virtues of a good primer in their makeup routine. Expressing a desire to use one properly is the first step in your journey to becoming a primer pro. Keep reading »
BB cream is one of those makeup products that just appeared on the American market in the past year, causing every woman here to scratch her chin and say, “Hmmm, do we really need this?!” BB cream is basically a combination foundation/moisturizer/primer and sometimes it’s got sunscreen in it, too. Some people swear by their BB cream. I know a few ladies who go nuts for Garnier BB cream, for instance. So when The Body Shop sent the The Frisky a few shades of their new All-In-One BB Cream to test drive, I just had to pick it up. While I’m not a full-on BB cream convert, I have to admit it’s a lot less of a hassle than using a foundation and makeup brush! Keep reading »
“How about a summer foundation recommendation for a girl with super sensitive and acne-prone skin? I’ve even tried Garnier BB Cream. Breaks me out like crazy — even if I use my Clarisonic afterwards. Ick!” – Nikki via Facebook
Hi, Nikki! I know — it’s hard out here for a sensitive, acne-prone girl, especially this season. I have the same type of skin, and being that I’m always in search of the latest, greatest products for it, I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. Follow me… Keep reading »
We all want airbrushed smooth skin without having to pay the hundreds of dollars fancy airbrush makeup kits cost, am I right? Thank God for BB Cream, a masterful all-in-one cream that does the job of an airbrush makeup without the high cost. Smashbox’s BB Cream is lightweight and airy, and comes with SPF 35. It’s an all-in one, and moisturizes, primes, perfects, controls oil, and protects for flawless skin. You can wear it as a primer underneath foundation, or alone as a light base for bronzer and blush. Either way, BB Cream is my new go-to for glow-y, even-toned skin, without spending a zillion bucks in the process. [$39, Sephora]
I am 27-years-old and I have been wearing makeup for 13 years. And it has taken me all 13 of those years to find the perfect foundation, a creamy (but not too creamy) and illuminating (but not too illuminating) base.
Goodbye, MAC. Goodbye, Smashbox . Welcome to my life, Maybelline FIT ME foundation. Keep reading »
A couple of weeks ago, my friends over at Maybelline asked me to come over and check out what they’ll be launching for spring. While I was definitely feeling the juicy-looking tubes of lip gloss (how plump everyone’s lips will look!), mega mascara and seriously pretty new shades of eyeshadow (how gorge they’ll make our eyes!), I will always be a true sucker for great-looking skin, so it was their new foundation product that led me into makeup artist Kerry Malouf’s chair. It started innocently enough–we were just chatting away about the new product when I told her my great big sob story: “All this stress and holiday running around is making my skin look like crap.” So she invited me to sit down and let her fix me up, and, well, people, am I glad I took her up on it. In fact, I’m not even a foundation wearer, but this new Instant Age Rewind Eraser is so dope that I’ve seriously started to change my ways. Here’s a preview and why I think you’ll like it too. Years ago, I was forced to accept my pale skin after burning my face so badly that blisters covered my nose. Now, while others slather on tanning oil with single-digit sun protection, I have to cover myself with a muumuu and wide-brimmed hat for fear of burning. If the Twilight Saga had been around earlier, I might not have had to endure the pain of a lobster red face or waited so long to stock up on SPF. According to the Daily Mail, women are embracing their pale skin following the release of “New Moon.” Keep reading »
