Are you a mother? Do you know someone who is? You probably do, and that’s why you should be very concerned about Alabama’s chemical endangerment clause, which aims to protect fetuses from mothers who abuse drugs. Alabama’s law — and others like it — signify a wave of legislation aimed at granting fetuses more rights and women less, effectively treating mothers as second class citizens.

“Absolutely, and as a pro-choice feminist, that was certainly my concern going in. No matter what, I would not have done this movie if it violated my own beliefs — I would have just walked away — so I had to find a way into it that was in line with my own thinking and yet not violating anyone else’s beliefs. So that was probably one of the initial challenges of it. I’ve also heard the comment that Bella is the one who’s constantly sacrificing, and wow, I never saw her as someone who sacrificed anything. If anyone’s sacrificing anything, it’s Edward, because from the very beginning — and certainly in this film — she knows what she wants and goes for it, hell or high water. She’s perhaps even a little selfish because she’s so driven for what she wants. ‘Okay, so I die and Edward’s broken-hearted for the rest of eternity? Well, tough luck, I’m going for it anyway.’ She’s very clear, and frankly, I see her as a very strong character. Do other people see her as someone who sacrifices? Absolutely, but I’ve never written her that way, and it actually took me by surprise.”

— “Breaking Dawn” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who also wrote the three previous flicks) on a debate in this film between the Cullens about whether to call the vampire-thing in Bella’s belly “baby” or a “fetus.” I have not seen this latest movie yet, but frankly I am surprised a fetus vs. baby debate would take place in a series with such a conservative reputation. However, I also wonder if it was calculated on Rosenberg’s part to call herself a “pro-choice feminist” here, since “Twilight” has lonnnng been bashed for being unfeminist. [NYmag.com]

Fetuses “Testify” On Ohio Abortion Bill

Two fetuses — er, “unborn children,” as anti-abortion folks call them — testified in Ohio today regarding a bill that would criminalize abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.

Very funny, Ohio. Keep reading »

  • The CEO of Deutsche Bank, Josef Ackermann, said more women would add color and beauty to his boardroom. Because that’s what we’re here for: to look pretty for you, sir. [Sky News]

Barbara Bush Didn’t Show Dubya A Fetus In A Jar — The Maid Did, Silly

Fresh off of telling Sarah Palin to stay up in Alaska, former First Lady Barbara Bush set the record straight with Larry King about her son’s bizarro “fetus in a jar” story in his new memoir, Decisions Points. Keep reading »

Online Abortion Vote Is Likely An Anti-Choice Publicity Stunt

Pete and Alisha Arnold made national headlines when, via their site, BirthOrNot.com, the couple asked the public to vote on whether they should have a baby or an abortion. But it appears this was actually an anti-choice publicity stunt.

I cannot handle this much nonsense after 4 p.m. on a Friday, but for you, dear Frisky readers, I will try. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Anti-Abortion Group Compares Fetuses To Slaves

  • Personhood Colorado, an anti-abortion group that tries to get fetuses designated as “people” so that abortion is legally considered murder, has a controversial new campaign comparing fetuses to slaves. Upcoming radio ads will be voiced by a fictional slave named George Stevens who will talk about how people are not property. Can you say “tasteless”? [The Denver Daily News]
  • “Bro”-zilian waxes for men are probably not as much of a “new trend” as Salon.com claims, nor are they a sign of equality, either. [Styleite.com]
  • Remiss as I am to give this any attention whatsoever, here’s a guide on how to deal with the dreaded “angry feminists.” Apparently, overcoming sexism and achieving equality between men and women is supposed to be as pleasant for everyone as possible?! Sounds radical! I’ll make a note of that and try to be happier in my posts about female genital mutilation, rape and pay inequity. Anyway, this stupid articles quotes a bunch of different women with totally, totally different viewpoints, like suffragette Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Valerie Solanas, a crazy person who tried to murder Andy Warhol. Clearly, AskMen.com’s “relationship correspondent” needs to brush up on her women’s history. [AskMen.com]

Who Wants A Fetus Cocktail?

Juuuust kidding. This is actually an Italian public service announcement to discourage women from drinking when there’s a bun in the oven and reads, simply, “When Mama drinks, baby drinks.” The disturbing ads, which will appear on buses, billboards and in women’s restrooms throughout the Veneto region, are in response to recent findings that 65 percent of Italian women indulge in a little vino during pregnancy. How do you say “fetal alcohol syndrome” in Italian? [Telegraph UK] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Virginia School Tries To Figure Out Who Gave “Fetus Dolls” To Kids

  • Wow, this will be one interesting faculty meeting: an employee at Oakwood Elementary School in Virginia was placed on administrative leave last Thursday after it was discovered that 4-inch-tall plastic human fetus dolls were handed out to third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students. Apparently, the fetus dolls, which were not instruction materials meant for class, were handed out over the past few months and came attached with a “pro-life” message and information on the first 12 weeks of fetal growth. Oakwood’s principal has also been placed on leave while an investigation takes place. [HamptonRoads.com]
