todays lady news
  • A law in the UK punishing adults who carry out female circumcision (also called FGM or female genital mutilation) is being strengthened with a new amendment to include other adults, beyond British citizens and permanent residents, who take girls to be cut. The new legislation would punish “habitually resident” foreign citizens living in the UK with 14 years in prison. [Standard UKGuardian UK]

Female genital mutilation (also called female circumcision) should be treated just like child abuse and considered a crime, according to a new report called “Tackling Female Genital Mutilation In The UK.”

The report, which was put together by Equality Now, the Royal Colleges of Midwifery, Nursing, Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the union Unite, stipulated any evidence of FGM should be reported to police and educators. Currently over 24,000 girls under age 18 are at risk of having their clitorises and labia removed, said the report, because they live with women who had FGM themselves. Keep reading »

Today's Lady News photo
  • British Prime Minister David Cameron is set to announce a huge foreign aid plan to eradicate female genital mutilation across the world. FGM has been performed on roughly 140 million women worldwide with the intention of removing parts of their genitalia so they do not feel sexual pleasure. The government hopes it can reduce female genital cutting by 30 percent over the next five years. [The Daily Beast]

Oprah made an appearance in Vancouver yesterday, with tickets going for upwards of $350. But not everyone was overjoyed about the Big O’s Canadian visit. Glen Callender, founder of the Canadian Foreskin Awareness Project, was there, along with his supporters, to protest Oprah’s endorsement of SkinMedica, a line of beauty products made with  “foreskin fibroblast.” Winfrey has called the product her “magic fountain of youth and miracle wrinkle cream.” Callender compared Oprah’s endorsement of SkinMedica to the condoning female genital mutilation. Study: Female Genital Mutilation Ruins Sex Lives

Today's Lady News
  • Today in No Duh News: women who are forced to have their genitals cut as young girls have more sexual dysfunction as adults, according to a new study in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. FGM or female circumcision removes all or part of a girl’s clitoris and labia for the purpose of restricting her enjoyment of sex. One-hundred-and-thirty million women have been cut, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. [Reuters]

Grab Those Snippers! San Francisco Judge Nixes Circumcision Ban On Ballot

Snip away, San Francisco! A judge ruled yesterday that the city cannot vote on whether to ban circumcision on the ballot next election. The ban, which was spearheaded by activist Lloyd Schofield, would have made “genital mutilation” of minors punishable by a $1,000 fine or a year in prison. The Jewish community was meshuggenah about the ban, as circumcising infants is part of their religious practice. But religious or moral reasons are not why Superior Court Judge Loretta Giorgi nixed the ballot initiative: she agreed there are compelling medical reasons for circumcision and laws regulating doctors and healing professions must be made on the state level. Schofield is expected to appeal. Keep reading »

What The Hell Is “Breast Ironing”?

Hold on to your girls before you read this, ladies.

There is a practice called “breast ironing” in the African country of Cameroon, a practice which involves flattening a girl’s growing breasts with hot stones to prevent her nipples from being firm and “enticing men.” The news network CurrentTV filmed a short documentary on “breast ironing,” specifically how mothers believe it will “protect” their daughters from teen pregnancy if men are not tempted by their pert breasts. Pursuing The Perfect Vagina Has Plenty Of Problems

Vaginas! Let’s talk about them. Perhaps, like me, you don’t know much about what anyone’s vagina looks like, except for your own. But it turns out the lips of the labia can be “innies” or “outies,” just like belly buttons, and “outies” … well, they look just like they sound. Surely, women with “outies” can feel discomfort down there when riding a bike or wearing tight-fitting jeans. But the truth is, the majority of the time a woman gets labioplasty surgery on her vagina, she’s letting a plastic surgeon have a go at her hooda with a scalpel for aesthetic reasons. She wants the perfect vagina, but what the heck is that?
