According To NYFW, Black Is The New Black For Next Summer

Spring and summer fashion is generally pretty predictable insofar as it is, well, summery — think airy, diaphanous fabrics in light, muted colors accented by eye-catching brights, and you’ve just about hit the nail on the head every time. As the S/S 2013 shows crop up, we get a good glimpse at what to expect come next year … and is it just me, or is it all turning out to be a bit darker than usual? That’s not to say that the season’s requisite lightness, comparably more cheerful than that of Autumn/Winter styles, has been sacrificed in favor of deeper, moodier hues; it’s just that all of the whites and pastels are offset by a whole lot of black. I’m the last to complain — black is the predominate color in my wardrobe — so yes, I am unquestionably biased, but I think the contrast serves to make the clothes all the more striking. Are you, like me, thrilled that some of your favorite black pieces might just make the spring/summer cut, or are you all about the whites and brights come June, regardless of what the runway dictates? Elie Saab Sends Droolworthy Dresses Down The Runway At Paris Couture Week

Reason #5934 why being rich and famous wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world: Elie Saab. Actually, while we’re waxing hyperbolic, let’s give him the top slot. I can’t think of a single designer more imaginative, more unique, more timeless, or more committed to the most exquisite detail than Saab. It’s never conceptual or difficult to understand, but it’s also never boring, and it’s always stunningly beautiful. You know who I’d love to see in one of Saab’s designs? Kate Middleton. She would be flawless, no?

Remember the custom-built, $8 million train that rolled into the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter show at Paris Fashion Week a few months ago? It isn’t being put in storage just yet–in fact, it’s been reconstructed in a New York studio to serve as the backdrop for the collection’s ad campaign. Steven Meisel shot the ads, starring 10 female models decked out in uber glamorous travel wear, assisted by four male porters. Says designer Marc Jacobs: “We wanted to continue the journey we started with the fashion show,” including “the glamour of travel and the romance of going somewhere.” Wherever that train’s going, we’d love to catch a ride. Check Out The Awesome Street Style In Melbourne, Australia

Melbourne’s Fashion Week is on right now, but what’s happening on the streets is just as interesting as the catwalk. Maybe it’s because Australia’s a bit more isolated from the rest of the fashion world, but the street style in Melbourne is really on point. We could all learn a thing or two from these girls …

The Best Of Paris Fashion Week Beauty

Paris Fashion Week is my favorite for many reasons, not all of which are a direct result of my all-encompassing Francophilia. I love the grandiose clothes marched down the catwalk, the sense of total, no-holds-barred luxury, and, well, the refined French-ness of it all. It also helps that many of the most iconic designers show there. Whatever the reason, I haunt Style.com for eight days, clicking furiously until the latest coverage appears, then I drink it all in with my eyes wide and mathematically assess my chances of wedding an impossibly wealthy, possibly corrupt oligarch who has the means to finance all of my wildest fashion dreams. Just kidding! As someone whose personal mantra is “think rich, look poor,” ballroom confections aren’t my thing. What I do covet straight off the runway is the beauty. It certainly helps that models are beautiful to begin with, but the makeup artists who serve them have all but mastered the art of taking pretty perfect canvases and turning them into flawless works of art. Here are my favorite beauty looks, hot off the runway. Tell me — which of these faces would you like to try yourself? [all images via Style Bistro]

Marc Jacobs Sends A Real Live Locomotive Down The Runway At Louis Vuitton

Watch Video

Louis Vuitton is basically synonymous with luxury, so it’s no surprise that the brand goes all-out for its shows … especially with one Marc Jacobs at the helm. If you thought last season’s stunning life-size carousel was unbeatable, well, think again. As is fitting for a collection heavily influenced by “the golden age of rail travel,” Jacobs and team Vuitton truly outdid themselves with a custom-painted, LV-branded steam locomotive that transported the models out onto the runway. I can only daydream about the kinds of shows Marc would produce should he be tapped for la Maison Dior … [Fashionista]
