Fashion begins on the runway. Once the seasonal collections are shown, the standard is set for labels everywhere, who work to emulate — but not copy — the hottest catwalk trends. The clothes we purchase from stores such as H&M, Zara, and Urban Outfitters all have one thing in common: they’re often loose interpretations of garments spotted, well, elsewhere. In much the same way, beauty also begins on the runway. Makeup trends dictate what we choose to apply to our faces season after season. It’s easy to garner your fair share of inspiration from lofty, oft unattainable looks. Though runway beauty is, generally, stunningly theatrical, you can still recreate it in daily life with an arsenal of products and a light hand. After the jump, some of the top runway faces from Autumn/Winter ’11 (which debuted nearly eleven months ago — fashion also predicts the future!) and how to get similar looks on your own.

This poor model, spotted on the runways of China’s Fashion Week, seems locked in a bird cage of emotion!

This year, as in every year, there was an absence of plus-sized women at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, which gave the organizers of Full-Figured Fashion two options: either lie down and take it, or fight back. They decided to fight back, and organized their own incredible Full-Figured Fashion Week, featuring a slew of fashion shows, runway competitions and sales tailored to the plus-size consumer. Vice’s report on the event, hosted quizically by waif-thin Charlet Duboc, chronicles the week’s events — and the rather unkind feelings non-plus-size women have toward toward their full-figured counterparts.

This Is What Modeling Does To Your Feet

I hope you have digested lunch, as the photo above, which you no doubt can’t tear your eyes from, is a bit stomach-turning. This is what happens when you walk in ridiculously high heels in countless runway shows over the course of the various fashion weeks — your feet turn black and blue (and yellow!) with hatred. Upon glimpsing these pics on a number of blogs, I got curious: what other atrocities are waged upon the hooves of catwalkers? Click through this slideshow to find out. Seriously, being a model’s foot sucks.

7 Models Falling On The Runway

Funny Or Not?
Should we laugh when models fall? DEBATE! Read More »

Hatfields vs. McCoys. Sox vs. Yankees. Sharks vs. Jets. People who laugh at models falling on runways vs. people who think laughing at someone else’s faceplant is cruel. Such distinctions either pull us humans apart or bring us together! I kinda have no opinion: I just think it’s bizarre that our culture praises adult women for tottering around in six-inch-tall shoes that impede their mobility and names this “attractive.” Then again, I (safely!) wear flats six days a week.

In the spirit of unity for my fellow human beings who appreciate a good falling model faceplant, here’s some of the craziest twisted ankles bruised egos on the catwalk:

Fashion Week Breakdown: The Wild Bunch

Fall fashion shows — highlighting Spring 2012 collections — continue on throughout Europe. And as they slowly wind down, we’ve noticed a bunch of designers who are truly pushing the boundaries of what Ready-to-Wear means. European designers like Ann Demeulemeester and Gareth Pugh aren’t staying safely within the confines of traditional sportswear, but instead are pushing their own unique perspective. Take a look at our gallery and check out some of the best more out-there looks.

19 Wearable & Unwearable Hair Styles At Fashion Week

Forget the clothes; the hair at fashion week is often just as memorable. And while fashion editors are busying predicting the trends for the next season, beauty editors are keeping an eye on how the models’ hair for the very same reason. Click on through this gallery of hair styles seen at NY Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011 and recognize that this can be a good or very, very bad thing.

New York Fashion Week’s Most Outrageous

While we love seeing all the polished, elegant ensembles on the runway and in the front row, sometimes New York Fashion Week’s most memorable moments are its most outrageous.

This season’s shows had plenty of outré outfits (especially at Jeremy Scott), crazily garbed guests (Nicki Minaj) and unexpected outings (Carine Roitfeld and Anna Dello Russo busting out their Karaoke moves at Manhattan hotspot The Westway).

Here are our nominees for the most outrageous. Read more… Keep reading »

Fashion Week Breakdown: Poppy Colors, Volume & One Very Hot Male Model At J. Crew
Well, imagine that. I have a total fashion boner for J. Crew’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Yeah, it’s basically more of the same from them, but the same is awesome. Fancy-lookin’ skirts dressed down by button-down shirts! Lady-like shapes unstuffy-fied (yeah, I made that verb up) by more colors than a bag of tropical Skittles! I’m in! Click onward to see some of my very favorite pieces and one gratuitous photo of a male model (center) I would like to make out with.

You Guys Really Need To See This Insane Thom Browne Collection, Okay?

So, I was flipping through the latest collections from NY Fashion Week and I came across American designer Thom Browne’s newest looks. Browne is more well-known for his menswear line, but this collection focused primarily on women. Or birds. Or lobsters. It’s just … out of control, from boxy shoulders, to outsized proportions, to fantastical sea creatures. You must see it to believe it!
