I remember 1993 like it was yesterday. CeCe Peniston was a “few-hit wonder,” and if you weren’t into grunge fashion, then you probably decked yourself out in the glamorous ’70s look that was in vogue at the time. Spurred along by pop singers like CeCe, palazzo pants had a major moment in ’93. They were a super roomy hybrid of bell bottoms and wide leg pants … and were extremely comfy. Are You Braced For The Beret Comeback?

Off the top off our heads, heh, people who wear berets: Beatniks, Parisians, Carrie Bradshaw trying to look like a dumb Parisian, models in the Spiegel catalogue, women in the ’80s.

That doesn’t paint the most appealing of pictures. While the beret has been around in fashion circles for ages, you probably haven’t had one in your closet in years. Then again, did you ever? These hats are pretty intimidating. Wearing one definitely makes a statement, and not everyone can pull it off without looking like they just walked out of a costume shop.Yet it looks like they’re making a comeback, as we’ve noticed the winter accessories popping up in new shipments at some trendy stores like Topshop, and even the more high-concept Oak in NYC. This season, Eugenia Kim‘s take on the beret has a Scottish vibe with a plaid print and showy pom-pom. Maybe these are novelty items on the shelves, but the fact that American Apparel is now selling a unisex (of course) beret as well is a sign that the masses are biting. You know what happens when hipsters start wearing something “original.” (Hint: It becomes the most common style out there.)

Do Fashion Trends Ever Really Die?

The “fashion comeback” has been on our brains lately, what with the Charles Jourdan revival, the resurfacing of the peasant blouse, sheer tops and the onslaught of ’80s-inspired styles that came to a head with Marc Jacobs‘ Fall ’09 collection (pictured), and that’s just to mention a few. However, Guardian writer Paul Cocozza says we might have everything all wrong. “Fashion doesn’t really do comebacks,” he writes. “It just never properly says goodbye.” Ooohhh, deep!
