The French Connection Guy Wants You To Understand Him

As Leo pointed out, the new French Connection ad campaign is really something, by which we mean “makes no logical sense.” Well, surprise, surprise. The commercials are equally incomprehensible. Meet “The Man.” He is confused by elevators, refuses to shave, and goes nowhere in life without the accompaniment of a French voice-over. NB: He wears not slogans or sequins! Eff, en fakt, zis iz zee mahn, ah zink zee mahn neez tew brusha heez hairz. [ANIMAL] Keep reading »

Did Jimmy Choo Rip Off A Fashion Blogger For Its New Ad Campaign?

Did Jimmy Choo rip off fashion blogger and photographer Tommy Ton of Jak & Jil for its new 24:7 ad campaign? That’s what Ton appears to be suggesting in this recent tweet: “is it me or does the jimmy choo 24:7 campaign look a lot like…ahem…you know what i mean :S http://www.jimmychoo.com/page/home.” Ton rose to fame by way of his delightful shots of women on the street, often outside of fashion shows, many of which focus on their high heels. His style is distinctive: shoe-obsessed, stark street shots of women navigating the world on towering stilettos. These days, he sits front row at fashion shows, shoots fashion week in Paris for Style.com, and is working on a project with Louis Vuitton. As a regular reader of Jak & Jil, I certainly see the similarities. Check out the Jimmy Choo video — which even features a Ton-esque street photographer character — and Ton’s work side-by-side after the jump, then tell us what you think in the comments. New Alexander McQueen Ads Feature Snakes On A Model

Gah! It’s the new ad campaign for Alexander McQueen‘s spring/summer 2010 collection. Starring Raquel Zimmermann and shot by Nick Knight, the image joins the models-lying-down trend with a nod (as our style editor Erin points out) to Richard Avedon’s infamous portrait of Natassja Kinski. Check out a bigger (rotated) version after the jump for a close-up. Keep reading »

Attack Of The Glamazons!

Cooly cranky ad dude Copyranter points us to these Amazon-themed ads created by Soho, a Zurich-based clothing store chain, that suggest their high heels will make you feel so high, you’ll be able to kiss the sky. I love these ads because a) they make me think of that wacky fetish called macrophilia, and b) I’m 6’1″, 6’4″ in my three-inch boots, and this is about how tall I feel when I wear them. A Sexy Sell? Barneys Window Displays Bleed With Violence

Fashion can be killer. Literally. Or at least the folks at luxury fashion retailer, Barneys, like to think so. The store’s most recent window displays feature “dead” mannequins in Helmut Lang and A.L.C., bloodied from their shootout (most likely a skirmish with the Fashion Police, we’d imagine). Where did this inspiration come from? Perhaps Barneys thought they’d ride on the vampire-chic wave, brought to you by Twilight and “True Blood” fans? [Racked]

But fashion advertising, in general, has always been known to ricochet between the ultimate in glamorous aspirational imagery and the other extreme, full of down-in-the-gutter sadism and beat-down grit — think “heroin chic.” [We're sure the NY Times would blame the recession for current upswing in the latter direction. -- Editor] After the jump, a look at some other recent fashion ads that pack a punch, quite literally.
