Spotted at New York Fashion Week: the inimitable Aila Wang, three-year-old niece of designer Alexander Wang and total future It girl. She’s only three, but Aila has her uncle’s trademark urban-chic on lock, not to mention a street style savvy that most aspiring fashionistas can only dream of. Nike kicks, black snakeskin, and a mini Chanel… um, Suri who? [World of Wonder]

Where Authenticity In Street Style Dies, Shameless Corporate Promotion Lives

When the term “street style” was first coined, it was the domain of the unstudied, the unstaged, the stylist or editor or blogger wearing an outfit that she had purchased and put together herself. Candid street style at its heart and in its purpose was refreshingly free of the business element that defines much, if not all, of the fashion world — nobody was being paid, sponsored, or otherwise compensated for wearing a certain article by a certain designer or brand. It was natural, honest, and not ruled by celebrity, and it wasn’t about who was wearing what; it was about how they were wearing it, and with what. It was new and inspiring, the idea that any girl could go swanning about a major city in a top from H&M and thrifted pants by Gucci and a vintage hat via her grandmother’s closet and be photographed (provided she be thin and attractive enough to draw the eye, which is of course the vulgar truth of fashion) with a flashy expensive camera by a well-dressed perfect stranger with a business card and a .com web address and find herself immortalized on the web the very next day. Trendspotting: 6 Brand-New Beauty Ideas From NYFW

When a designer strays outside the box of beauty stalwarts, it’s a refreshing change, given our steady diet of so-called “trends” — smoky eyes, red lips, dewy skin, and bold brows. These ubiquitous looks are beautiful and striking, but they’re also easy go-tos, which on principle renders them, well, kind of boring. But with each new season comes a fresh crop of innovative makeup looks that we guarantee you’ll see on the red carpet come 2013. Behold, the six top trends we’ve spotted on the catwalk this week…

The Best And Worst Of Celeb Street Style At NYFW

It’s true: most of the fun of Fashion Week occurs off the runway. It’s not that I don’t look forward to seeing the shows, because of course I do, but with all of the celebrity action that comes with the territory, it’s impossible not to be curious about what they’re wearing to the events. Click through to see some of the looks we’ve spotted on the illustrious front row…

As a child of the ’90s, I have an intrinsic emotional association with Mandy Moore. I vividly recall listening to her completely inane songs on my Walkman waiting for my mom to pick me up from karate (not an isolated incident, she was always late to pick me up from karate). Mandy has done a lot of growing up since she was last in the spotlight, and since I was last at karate, and I guess she’s kind of awesome now? It’s evident that her “Cry” days are long gone: she appeared in a couple of rom-coms, got married to Ryan Adams (who I, as a longtime Jeff Tweedy fan, do not enjoy, but whatever), voiced Rapunzel in “Tangled,” and is now working on a brand-new album that will (presumably) be a drastic departure from the vaguely nauseating tracks of yore.

I’m willing to give Mandy another chance, especially since she’s been looking all kinds of stylish at New York Fashion Week! If that doesn’t say comeback, then I don’t know what does. I’m “Crush”-ing hard on this look in particular: it’s a subtle segue into the dark, dramatic beauty trends on the forecast, but it’s still sweet and pretty enough to wear through the interim. If you’re ready to jump the gun on fall beauty, but aren’t quite prepared to delve into dark aubergine shades, cop Mandy’s look right now! Keep reading »

According To NYFW, Black Is The New Black For Next Summer

Spring and summer fashion is generally pretty predictable insofar as it is, well, summery — think airy, diaphanous fabrics in light, muted colors accented by eye-catching brights, and you’ve just about hit the nail on the head every time. As the S/S 2013 shows crop up, we get a good glimpse at what to expect come next year … and is it just me, or is it all turning out to be a bit darker than usual? That’s not to say that the season’s requisite lightness, comparably more cheerful than that of Autumn/Winter styles, has been sacrificed in favor of deeper, moodier hues; it’s just that all of the whites and pastels are offset by a whole lot of black. I’m the last to complain — black is the predominate color in my wardrobe — so yes, I am unquestionably biased, but I think the contrast serves to make the clothes all the more striking. Are you, like me, thrilled that some of your favorite black pieces might just make the spring/summer cut, or are you all about the whites and brights come June, regardless of what the runway dictates? Elie Saab Sends Droolworthy Dresses Down The Runway At Paris Couture Week

Reason #5934 why being rich and famous wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world: Elie Saab. Actually, while we’re waxing hyperbolic, let’s give him the top slot. I can’t think of a single designer more imaginative, more unique, more timeless, or more committed to the most exquisite detail than Saab. It’s never conceptual or difficult to understand, but it’s also never boring, and it’s always stunningly beautiful. You know who I’d love to see in one of Saab’s designs? Kate Middleton. She would be flawless, no?
