Oh Dear God, Overalls Are In Style

AP

Sweet Jesus, overalls are officially “in.” Ralph Lauren (runway shot above), Jean Paul Gaultier, Roberto Cavalli and other designers sent models down the runway sporting versions of the popular farm wear that ranged from questionable all-leather numbers to one quite unfortunate overall-inspired metallic evening gown. Now, don’t get me wrong: I love a comfy overall and I certainly do agree that they look adorable. On toddlers. I may have been known to sport an overall or two as recently as college, maybe even after that, here and there. But there comes a time in a grown-ass woman’s life when she’s simply a bit too mature to pull off certain looks, know what I’m saying? That’s why God created sexy jumpsuits for, I guess, you know, to satisfy that onesie urge. Much like those clogs that came clumping down spring runways, this is a look I’ll have to pass on. But you tell me: After it trickles down and Topshop and H&M and everyone else inevitably starts trying to sell you the trend, will you buy in? [Style.com]

Mathematical Proof That Fashion Trends Really Are Cyclical

An updated view of Laver's Law

Show me a graph, flow chart, or anything that looks like it could have come from my math textbook in high school and I’m lost. Numbers and equations are simply not my thing. But transition the hard facts into fashion trends and you’ve got my attention ...

One Good Thing To Come Out Of The Depression: Great Clothes

depression fashion

If you’ve ever taken a look at fashion from the ‘30s and ‘40s, when “depression” and “recession” were everyday words, you might be feeling a bit of déjà vu lately. The fabric shoes, high-waisted skirts, and show-stopping accessories that marked these decades are having a comeback, perhaps thanks to our very own current economic turmoil. An exhibit in Paris’ Musée Jean Moulin called “Accessories and Artefacts: Women’s Lives in Paris 1940-1944” showcases women’s accessories from the French occupation. Hearing about the show in the New York Times inspired us to draw some comparisons ourselves. Click through for clothing similarities from the Great Depression and today. Some looks are recession-inspired, others are worthy of a comeback because they made our jaws drop. If you thought cute rompers, floral blouses, intricate head pieces, and strict, tailored jackets were modern trends, wait until you see the lovely ladies of old-time Hollywood wearing similar styles in these photos from the ‘30s and ‘40s.

  • You better think twice before pushing Nicky Hilton around. A man was arrested outside of an IHOP early Saturday for shoving the Hilton sister. But before the cops could put the cuffs on him, Nicky placed the pusher under citizen’s arrest. You go girl! [E!]
  • Speaking of IHOP, tomorrow is National Pancake Day. Guess who’s giving away free pancakes tomorrow? Free food is always good. [Walletpop.com]

How To Know When A Trend Has “Jumped The Shark”

Trends Jumping The Shark, How To Tell

True story: I mostly miss the boat on trends. About three years ago, Ray-Ban Wayfarers made the scene. I saw them on the likes of Kirsten Dunst and Sienna Miller in paparazzi photos—and, at the time, wasn’t so sure about their place in my wardrobe. For one, I wasn’t about to spend the money on something that wouldn’t at least kick around for a season (cough cough, my numerous misguided baby doll dress purchases) but also, I didn’t know if they could be me. Let’s just say that, sartorially speaking, I’m not hipster-ish, not super-pink-green-and-pearls-preppy—I try to be a classic version of what’s happening in fashion at any given time. How would Vogue characterize me? Slightly seasonally madcap, but optimistically sophisticated? Uh, yeah sure, I’ll stick to that.

So, for the last three years I’ve mulled over the Wayfarer purchase, at times getting quite close to plunking down the 120 dollars—i.e. spending an hour in Solstice discovering that buying a pair can be rather confusing, didja know there are about three versions of the original out there?—and alternatively swearing off the trend completely. Fashion shouldn’t be this hard. I should save my over-analyzing nature for more important topics, right?

Mostly my M.O. is to become entirely no-looking-back enthralled with a trend because of one photo.

Every year we look to celebrities for fashion inspiration, and 2008 was no different. Some celebs veered a little too far left of what is fashionably acceptable and others hit the target. Thoughts From Guys On Our IM: Fashion (Disaster) Week

    Mary-Kate Olsen

I imagine that Fashion Week must be the most annoying ridiculous chain of events for straight men—it’s the week when a bunch of gay designers and pretentious fashion editors dictate what women will be wearing in the forthcoming months, and most of it looks like total crap in eyes of MAN. With that in mind, I decided to ask the guys on our IM about the fashion trends they find appealing on women and which ones the absolutely deplore. Surprise—two words rhyming with “pladiator scandals” popped up.

    They’re Bringing Kinky Back

    S&M-Inspired Fashion

From the runway to the pages of magazines, fashion is experiencing a resurgence of SM-inspired style. Calvin Klein handcuffs? Check. Whip-wielding models? You bet. Back in the 90s, Versace paved the way with bondage gear that borrowed heavily from the underground fetish scene. Now that kink has gone mainstream, more designers are finding their influences in the SM scene. Last year, Dolce & Gabbana brought the sexy back with crops and padlocked belts. Today, fetish is everywhere.

Five Reasons Guys Should Not Wear Shorts To Work

    Gossip Girl's Chuck Bass

Today’s New York Times Style Section article “Shorts Crack the Code” says it’s okay and increasingly common for men to wear shorts to work. We don’t support this fad because:

    1. Forests of leg hair.
    2. Dangling bits.
    3. The existence of air conditioning.
    4. Shorts + loafers = douche.
    5. Even Chuck Bass can’t pull them off.

    Jumpsuits As Punishment

    black jumpsuit

Guess Gonzalez, TX, school district didn’t get the memo that jumpsuits are a fashion “do” these days. Kids from 5th grade through high school who come to school dressed inappropriately will be forced to put on a black, school-issued jumpsuit. Sure, it’s a little prison, but with the right accessories, I’d wear it. [CNN]

Trend We Thought Died: High-Heeled Sneakers

    High-Heeled sneaker by Ash

Remember high-heeled sneakers? I think they were popular for a time during the Clueless days, and then brought back for a split second by Jenny From Da Block, but I thought for sure they’d been retired permanently. Not so. Spotted on one of our favorite little shopping sites online, ShopBop.com. For SHAME. [ShopBop.com and StyleHive]
