If we know our readers, then we’re guessing fashion dominates your every thought. But how far would you go to be wearing the absolute latest and hottest looks? Would you wear something knowing it could, at some point, kill your ass?

Through history men and women have been asked that exact question, and time and time again they shrugged and said, “Eh, I’ll risk it.” So we wound up with things like… Keep reading »

The Trend That Is Not A Trend: Sewing Clothes!

Cutting edge paper thing The New York Times has uncovered a thriving underworld in Brooklyn, full of women who have taken up needles and thread for this thing called — what is it called? — sewing? Apparently, these sewing wonders, make their own garments! At home. By hand. This is a trend, this people making their own clothes thing. Crazy, I know. The Times agrees, and found the time to profile Sarah Kate Beaumont, who sews clothes out of her Park Slope apartment. Sarah Kate, who “majored in English literature at Bryn Mawr College, where she rode a unicycle in leggings and a skirt,” sewed several items of clothing “as an experiment of self-reliance and artistic whimsy,” and now it’s “a way of life.” Some (the Times actually) might say Sarah Kate’s “whimsy” and “self-reliance” are just reflective of Brooklyn’s independent spirit, its burgeoning, itching (like an STD) desire to be seen as an separate entity from Manhattan. Yes, because Brooklynites are always living their lives as a metaphor. But others (again, The New York Times, natch) might argue that the back-to-sewing movement is simply an extension of the “back to the land” pioneer movement. We say: this is not a trend. Women be making their own clothes since the beginning of times, idiots. Next week, in part two of the Times series on The Sewing Trend, a little show called “Project Runway”! The Worst Fashion Trends Of 2010

Single? Not sure why? Blame your closet. We haven’t exactly been shy about expressing our fashion preference when it comes to the opposite sex—I recently opined about the horrors of message tees, turtlenecks, and khakis on men, and male dating expert Abraham Lloyd weighed in the horrors of baby doll dresses and jeggings on women (sigh). How To Get The Tie Dye Trend Right

Apparently tie dye is a full-blown trend at this point; we literally can’t go a day without being visually assaulted by the stuff. Sometimes, the girls we see wearing it are pulling it off. Other times, however, it’s a hot hippie mess all over the place. If you insist on joining the hordes of latter-day-free-lovers, make sure to get it right. A few tips after the jump. Keep reading »

Trend Spotting: Will You “Rock” The Quilted Look?

When it comes to fashion, there’s good quilted (think the classic Chanel bag), and there’s, well, this. While normally respectable houses like Balmain, Marc Jacobs, Burberry and Miu Miu have all recently sent patchwork renditions down their runways, we have to draw the line at PPQ’s head-to-toe concoctions. In fact, it brings to mind my pretty standard rule of thumb when it comes to evaluating trends from the runway to the realway: If it looks bad on the models, you know you’ll be in trouble. Seriously, I just do not see these working out for anyone except perhaps the big cozy bed in my fictitious country house. Anyone? [Daily Mail] Keep reading »

Oh Dear God, Overalls Are In Style

Sweet Jesus, overalls are officially “in.” Ralph Lauren (runway shot above), Jean Paul Gaultier, Roberto Cavalli and other designers sent models down the runway sporting versions of the popular farm wear that ranged from questionable all-leather numbers to one quite unfortunate overall-inspired metallic evening gown. Now, don’t get me wrong: I love a comfy overall and I certainly do agree that they look adorable. On toddlers. I may have been known to sport an overall or two as recently as college, maybe even after that, here and there. But there comes a time in a grown-ass woman’s life when she’s simply a bit too mature to pull off certain looks, know what I’m saying? That’s why God created sexy jumpsuits for, I guess, you know, to satisfy that onesie urge. Much like those clogs that came clumping down spring runways, this is a look I’ll have to pass on. But you tell me: After it trickles down and Topshop and H&M and everyone else inevitably starts trying to sell you the trend, will you buy in? [Style.com] Keep reading »

Mathematical Proof That Fashion Trends Really Are Cyclical

Show me a graph, flow chart, or anything that looks like it could have come from my math textbook in high school and I’m lost. Numbers and equations are simply not my thing. But transition the hard facts into fashion trends and you’ve got my attention … Keep reading »
