Taking Fashion To New Heights—Literally

Holy models scaling buildings! And here you thought being a model was a luxurious job where all you had to do was sit around looking pretty. For the beginning of High Street Fashion Week in London, ladies in designer goods participated in a “vertical fashion show,” seductively sliding down Oxford Street buildings by harness and wire. Some of the models actually had stunt experience, like Amanda Green, a double for Halle Berry, who told Metro, “I’m used to doing big action stunt sequences but the sight of four-inch heels and a five-story vertical catwalk was enough to push me over the edge.”

Victoria Beckham: “Most [Models] Are Naturally Thin”

Can anyone keep Victoria Beckham’s body image philosophy straight? She seems to constantly flex between opposing contradictions. One second, the media is calling out her anorexic-seeming lifestyle and the next she’s quoted as being pro-curves. To be honest, our opinion of Beckham wavers as well. Sometimes she frightens us with her so-thin physique that’s nearly alien-like, but at the same time, we absolutely respect the woman’s talent and style and agree that her Fashion Week show was a hands-down success. When Posh went on “The View” yesterday to talk about her work and the fashion industry, she seemed very pro-health: “The CFDA have reached out to designers, stylists and casting directors not to work with underage models, girls that are too thin and to be more ethnically aware. And I think designers are listening. I had a casting last week and had some terribly thin girls come in and it wouldn’t have worked.” This would seem to suggest she’s not into the heroin-chic look. And yet Beckham also said, “Most of these girls are naturally thin. And I don’t think we should be discriminating against someone because they are too thin or too curvy or too large or whatever it is.” Most models are naturally thin? We’re not so sure about that.

Backstage At The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

We have to wait until Dec. 1 to see the full insanity of the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, but this teaser is totally making us want to tune in. Seriously, who can say no to a bevy of insanely hot girls (one of whom brought her puppy!), the unprecedentedly minimalistic wings, and fancy underwear? Cheesy though it is, the VS show is a pretty fun tradition at this point, and we love seeing a little of the prep work that goes into it. From tables of hair extensions to mounds of body glitter, it’s hilarious how much it takes to make these models look “natural!” Our favorite part though? Makeup artist Tom Pecheux talking about his ultimate show goal: “I want the girls to be like ‘wow, those bitches look fabulous!’” Well, congratulations, Tom — those bitches DO look fabulous. Naomi Campbell Has A Kind Of Awesome Side

For once, controversial supermodel Naomi Campbell is making headlines for something other than cell phone beatdowns. I don’t know how long she’s been involved in charity work (maybe it’s been overshadowed by her more notorious exploits), but evidently she visits Africa often and is the global ambassador for the White Ribbon Alliance, an international coalition for maternal health, which is holding its annual general meeting in Tanzania, where a woman dies in childbirth every hour. To raise money, she helped organize the Fashion for Relief charity featuring local designers, and gave a talk from the runway, which she used as a platform for another cause as well:

“Where do we see a woman of color in an advert? It’s quite blatant. There’s definitely space for more black models but has there been enough effort? It was getting better but it’s slipped back this year. Women of color who have had a great experience in life need to share their experiences with others. The world is not made up of blonde hair and blue eyes. We need to share ourselves.”

Maybe she hired some spin doctors to fix up her image, but we like this new direction for Naomi, as crusader of change for the fashion industry and doing important charity work. Hey, it worked for Angelina. [Daily Mail] Keep reading »

Ever Wonder What Editors Fashion Show Notes Look Like?

Editor Glenn O’Brien (once of Interview magazine, Rolling Stone, High Times and now a blogger on men.style.com, among other endeavors) let’s us in on his mostly nonsensical, sometimes hilarious notes (he actually uses the word “ass plate” in descriptive terms) from the last ready-to-wear shows in Milan and Paris. The scribbles were mostly made in the dark, so he claims they “read like code and are skewed at an odd angle in a weird hand reminiscent of the webs researchers recorded after giving spiders LSD. I swear it was just the darkness, and maybe a little Champagne.” Readable or not, I always wonder what those front-row editors are scrawling in their chic, little books—so get a load Glenn’s wack-job thoughts on collections from Hussein Chalayan, Fendi, Max Mara, Roberto Cavalli, Givenchy, etc. [Style Guy Blog] Keep reading »

Quick Pic: Matching Hair

At today’s Christian Lacroix Haute Couture show in Paris, models wore polka dots, lots of tulle, and braided buns. In an interesting twist, their hair coordinated with their outfits. Now, my older sister painted her nails every single night for a year so they would coordinate with the next day’s outfit, and that was a lot of work. The hair coordinating would be at least 10 times more difficult, unless you wore the same color every day, of course. Keep reading »
