This Is What Happens When You Pose Like A Model In Public

Filmmaker Yolanda Dominguez decided to see what would happen if real women posed like fashion models. In public. And then she filmed the reactions of passersby. The result is both hilarious (at one point, a concerned McDonald’s employee comes to check on a woman who seems to have glued her clutch to her forehead) and intriguing. If you read a lot of fashion magazines, even the most contorted poses start to look familiar and even normal. It’s pretty jarring to see them taken out of context, and I think it says a lot about the way the fashion world views women. Check it out and let us know what you think! [YouTube] Keep reading »

Do You Have A Toxic Relationship With Fashion Magazines?

I have loved fashion magazines since I was a teen. I love the creative editorials and the styling ideas and the designer profiles, and for some reason I continue to love fashion magazines even though the Marie Claire fiasco last week reminded me that they don’t love me back. It’s a toxic relationship, really: they tell me I’m not rich enough or pretty enough or thin enough but I just keep coming back… Keep reading »

Quotable: Fergie On Being Called “Fugly”

“It has hurt me in the past when people say things like how ‘fugly’ I am or how horrible I look. I’ve had to learn not to give it such a high priority in life…. Look, when you’re trying to juggle all of this in your life, sometimes you’re not going to look perfect. I don’t have time to get a facial every couple of days.”

Fergie in Elle this month, on how she handles being called “fugly,” ahem. Another look at the fashion story, after the jump! [Elle]

Sadie Frost Goes Naked Sans Airbrushing

We’ve loved Sadie Frost ever since she played the scene-stealing Lucy against Winona Ryder’s Mina in “Dracula,” but here in the States, we don’t hear much about the British actress, except when her name is associated with her ex, Jude Law, whom we’ve heard entirely altogether too much about. That’s why we were surprised to see her today, all of her. The 44-year-old not only guest-edited Grazia magazine, but she also stripped down for a photo shoot. (Talk about multi-tasking.) Quick Tip Of The Day: DIY Your Own Wrapping Paper

Working in fashion, my apartment is constantly overrun with magazines. I’ve found every little nook and cranny to hide my favorites for storage, but sometimes, a few have to be sent down the trash chute. I’ll rip out choice editorials and shove them in scrapbooks or paste them on my inspiration board so as not to feel as though I’m completely abandoning an old friend. When the holidays or birthdays come around, I’ve found it’s the perfect time to recycle. You see, instead of buying wrapping paper (which I see as a huge waste of money), I carefully tear off magazine covers and use the glossy page as a present covering. Here’s a hint — W works best for larger books based on it’s size, while the international magazines are better choices in terms of aesthetics. My little DIY project is not only a innovative and decorative way of covering gifts, but a great way to re-use those beloved magazines. Or, if you’re not a magazine junkie like me, here are gorgeous, yet creative wrapping paper options for the holiday season. Keep reading »

The Old-School Fashion Hierarchy Is Falling Down

What would the fashion industry look like if it shrugged off the exclusivity that has characterized it for, well, centuries, and cut out the middleman? It seems like the process is already well underway. This year’s Fashion Weeks had everyone wondering the same thing, and the buzz is best summed up thusly:

“The shows during September and October were a first glimpse of what the elitist fashion world could soon become: a business where designers take their collections directly to customers, no longer filtered through fashion editors at glossy magazines and buyers at top stores.”

But does that really mean the end of old-school power players like, say, Anna Wintour and Joe Zee? [New York Times] Keep reading »

Quote Of The Day: Cindy Crawford Is Trying To Kill The Magazine Industry

“If you don’t like something, don’t buy it. Don’t buy the magazine if you don’t like what it says. If you don’t like the image a brand is putting out, don’t buy it. What I really don’t agree with is people who complain about it but still support it. You’re giving your power away. If people don’t want skinny models, stop buying the magazine with the skinny model, and believe me those magazines will change fast. It’s business.”

– Supermodel Cindy Crawford recommends boycotting fashion mags that only use skeletal models, making her Conde Nast/Hearst/Hachette Fillipacci enemy number one. [Huffington Post] Keep reading »

What Does 3D Mean For Fashion Magazines?

Despite the fact that I’ve totally succumbed to the internet in numerous ways, one former habit will just not die: My apartment is cluttered with magazines. Every month, my mailbox floods with glossies and flipping through the pages feels like fashion heaven. Sure, there’s The Fashion Spot where users painstakingly upload each and every page, but there’s just something about being able to flip through the editorials and see the beauty in person.

Could that be the one way internet magazines just can’t compete? Keep reading »
