Fall fashion shows — highlighting Spring 2012 collections — continue on throughout Europe. And as they slowly wind down, we’ve noticed a bunch of designers who are truly pushing the boundaries of what Ready-to-Wear means. European designers like Ann Demeulemeester and Gareth Pugh aren’t staying safely within the confines of traditional sportswear, but instead are pushing their own unique perspective. Oh, to be Abby Lee Kershaw, the sometimes-model and blonde muse for this Balmain Spring 2012 collection video. Watch her frolic and run with her Our Mountain bandmates — one of whom happens to be her very attractive boyfriend Matthew Hutchinson. Watch her smile and swing around bus stop poles wearing thousands of dollars in high end fashions. And yes, watch as she happily enjoys the sunset over the city, hand in hand with her special man. Now that the “Harry Potter” kids no longer have a bazillion dollar franchise to support, Emma Watson has got some free time, and it seems she’s opted to pick up some work as a fashion designer. No longer content to merely serve as a model/muse for Burberry, Watson is said to be launching her own line, and has been taking cutting, sewing and design classes, presumably at Brown University’s sister school, RISD. According to an unnamed source, “Emma wants to challenge herself creatively. She’s obsessed with art at the moment She’s already designed a line of T-shirts and wants to expand her skills to create bespoke evening wear.” So she’ll join Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag and Avril Lavigne, among others, as model/actress/muse/designer. This stylish scrapbook features personal anecdotes, photos, and memorabilia from America’s best-known fashion designers. Plus, it’ll look gorg sitting on your coffee table!
Apparently, most of us are already past our prime, having missed the opportunity for great career success because we’re over the age of 18. Is it just us, or does it seem like every other day we’re hearing about some new wonder child scoring a record deal, publishing a book, becoming insta-famous as blog or YouTube stars, and now, fashion designers? Most recently, there was Cecilia Cassini, the 10-year-old who had a trunk show at Fred Segal. Straying far from the amateur, however, 17-year-old Rael Stone goes for the seriously conceptual with his collection of unisex metal crowns and edgy knits. The British teen certainly isn’t just going for pretty aesthetic pleasure here. “This collection came from countryside footpath murders, estate rape, bored unoccupied teenagers, and isolation in overgrown wisteria-ridden cottages,” he said. Estate rape?! OK, maybe there’s a reason why we decided to wait until after our teenage years to seek fame and glory.

Is it just us, or has the past year been like The Invasion of the Superkids? Today we have another pint-sized talent to add to the list: Cecilia Cassini, a 10-year-old fashion designer. Getting her start at age 6 on a Singer sewing machine, Cecilia learned the craft by logging obsessive hours with a needle and thread and experimenting with different fabrics and designs. About to host her first trunk show at the Fred Segal store in Los Angeles (any designer’s dream), Cecilia’s creations are for kids with imagination—think sparkly dresses, lots of bows, bright colors, and sassy patterns. Time magazine takes it upon itself to narrow down the 100 most influential people in the world on a yearly basis to create the “Time 100″ list. Along with the requisite world leaders — Barack Obama, Bill Clinton — a few fashion people generally earn a spot for their efforts. But this year, the list includes just one designer, Marc Jacobs. In the issue, Victoria Beckham offers her opinion on Marc, claiming he’s “one of the most interesting and intellectual men” she’s ever known and crediting him with innovative designs and the skill to determine trends. And I certainly agree. After all, the man walks around in a kilt and has fashion editors scrambling to their seats in order to see his shows. My problem is with the rest of the list. Do Robert Pattinson, Lady Gaga, and Simon Cowell really belong on the same level as leaders like the President? I’d argue that designers like Karl Lagerfeld or Ralph Lauren are a great deal more influential than a celebrity who doesn’t know how to wash his hair. In our society, we value creativity and strive to be so unique that sometimes design and fashion are taken to extreme levels. Take for example the late Alexander McQueen‘s so-called “armadillo shoes” or Lady Gaga‘s wardrobe. There is nothing wrong with being outrageous, but a little goes a long way. That’s why I’m appreciating designer Lois (pronounced “Loy”) Samuels’ label “The Vessel” even more, especially the fall 2010 collection, which I had the chance to view up close and personal during New York Fashion Week. Last week at an event introducing Tory Burch’s eyewear line, Annika and I had a chance to talk to the designer herself. While it was interesting to hear about the clothes and accessories from the woman who created them (and pick out a pair of glasses to take home), we were most excited to learn that part of the reason Tory wanted to start a company was so she could eventually have a foundation to help other women.
