Strippers In Pop Culture

After a New York nightclub tried to justify its dancers getting the same “artistic” tax exemptions as ballerinas, New York’s highest court ruled this week that strip clubs will have to pay their state sales taxes (guess the lawmakers don’t see the artistry in stripping). This means the club’s cover charge and lap dances will be taxed. While New York isn’t giving a break to the pole-twirling ladies, Hollywood just can’t get enough of them! Olivia Wilde plays a sharp-tongued stripper who tries her hand at butter carving in the film “Butter,” Vanessa Hudgens will slip into lucite heels for her role as a stripper who escapes a serial killer in next month’s thriller “The Frozen Ground,” and Salma Hayek plays an exotic dancer for the third time in the recent French film “Americano.” Popular culture has a history of fascination with strippers, from tell-all books to R&B songs. So let’s take a look back at some of the most notable stripper moments in pop culture! Read more…

Advice From A Stripper: Strip Club Etiquette

Stupid mainstreaming of stripper culture. If I have to read another article about recession strippers, pole dancing classes, or strippers-turned-respectable-citizens, I’m going to throw my platforms at the cat. Our audience has changed, and instead of show behavior being learned by a young man on the occasion of his 18th or 21st birthday, it’s imparted from Auto-Tuned vocals and lists on the web. I’ve seen customers like the girl who slapped my ass so hard she bruised me, or the guy who threw quarters wrapped in dollar bills onto the stage. However, I assume ignorance before malice on their part, and, in that spirit, I offer these etiquette tips for customers in the strip club. Keep reading »

Strippers On Ice, Er, Wheels

Deja Vu in Las Vegas has come up with an exotic idea for how to get people to their club. They’ve created a stripper mobile. Yes, really. It has glass walls and a pole in the back where one of the club’s best dancers performs as it drives through town. The truck makes its rounds between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. and the girls wear bikinis, but still—there is the whole issue of kiddies seeing the funny business going down inside. And as the reporter in the video points out, what happens if the truck has to stop short? [CNN] Keep reading »

Fertility And The Affections Of Men

Deborah Anderson and her colleagues, who looked at Coca-Cola as a spermicide, weren’t the only ones awarded an Ig Nobel Prize by the Annals of Improbably Research magazine. Geoffrey Miller, an associate professor of psychology at the University of New Mexico received an Ig Nobel for his work studying female fertility. He and his colleagues studied the earnings of 18 exotic dancers and learned that the women’s earnings increased by at least $100 per five-hour shift when the women were their most fertile. “I have heard, anecdotally, that some lap dancers have scheduled shifts based on this research,” Miller said. We’re thinking that if strippers, er…exotic dancers saw this much of a difference in male “affection” based on their fertility, we should really only go on dates when we’re in our “fertile window.” Only that would also mean that if things went well on said dates, we’d also have the greatest chance of getting pregnant during that time. I guess a girl can’t have everything. [LiveScience] Keep reading »
