The first time I put a barbell across my back, I was in love.

Thanks to the myth that I needed to do high reps with light weights to get “toned” arms and legs (because, of course, as a woman, I wouldn’t want to get too “bulky”), I had dutifully curled my tiny hand weights a million times. In my continuing quest to become a runner, I’ve conquered a number of mental obstacles, but until recently, had yet to figure out the solution to a more tangible challenge: finding running clothes that are comfortable and functional for my big-busted, short, curvy body (not exactly the shape most athletic companies cater to). After finally tracking down my dream sports bra, my next goal was to find a pair of running shorts. The requirements:
- Thick spandex, because those flimsy nylon running shorts just don’t cut it.
- Don’t fall down, ride up, pinch, sag, or require any adjustments while running.
- Don’t make my thighs look like freshly stuffed sausages.
- Have a zip pocket for my keys, gym ID card, etc.
- Not too short.
That’s not too much to ask, is it? I’m feeling outraged on behalf of California’s Tiffany Austin. After recovering from injuries she suffered in a car accident, Austin joined Planet Fitness, whose ads boast of their no “gymtimidation” vibe, because she was excited to get back in shape. Fifteen minutes into her inaugural workout, Austin claims a manager approached her and said, “Excuse me we’ve had some complaints you’re intimidating people with your toned body. So can you put on a shirt?”
Austin agreed to wear a shirt over her midriff-baring tank-top because it “violated dress code.” While the manager was getting a shirt for her to put over her body, yet another staff member approached her to scold her. I think we can all agree that all the inclement weather is causing a collective bout of winter insanity. Everyone has their reasons. Mine is minor frostbite on my left, second toe that’s made trekking through slippery ice slush even more uncomfortable than it already was. Seriously, last night, I had a dream that it was summer. That’s it. Just that it was warm again.
But there is the tiniest bit of good news about the Winter Of Our Discontent. A study published in science journal, Cell Metabolism,concluded that shivering is just about as good for your body as exercise. Researchers found that the muscles of shivering people triggered a hormone that activates fat and burns energy to generate extra heat in the same way that rigorous exercise does. Keep reading »
