The 5 Best Things About Traveling (Besides The Actual Traveling Part)

5 Best Things about Traveling (Besides The Actual Traveling Part)

A few years ago a study came out that said the anticipation of a vacation actually makes people much happier than the vacation itself, and as much as I enjoy traveling, I must admit I find this to be true. I just booked a trip to France, Switzerland, and Iceland for later this year, and I’m SO excited.  Of course I’m stoked for the trip itself, but I’m almost equally thrilled about spending the next few months researching, planning my itinerary, and staring wistfully at photos of sidewalk cafes in Lyon. Nothing makes my life feel more colorful and energized than having a trip on the horizon — even if that horizon is pretty far off. Here are 5 things I love about traveling, none of which happen on the actual trip itself… Keep reading »

  • ABC’s new sitcom “Mixology” is apparently filled with crude jokes about rape, “whores,” and violence against women. Sounds like quality programming, Walt Disney Company. Family values indeed! [Hollywood Reporter]

I Want To Go To There: Grimm Fairytales Come To Life

Photographer Kilian Schonberger grew up in a wooded area of rural Germany, and was surrounded by the same dark, desolate landscape that had inspired the Brothers Grimm to write their famous fairytales a century earlier. He’s managed to capture images of modern central Europe that look like they were ripped from a dusty tome of Grimm tales, and now I’m dying to visit these eerie locales in person. Possibly while wearing a velvet cloak and practicing spells. See a few more of Schonberger’s spooky snaps after the jump… Keep reading »

All The Fabulous Camp From The Eurovision Song Contest

The Eurovision Song Contest is over, and we’re shedding a tear or two in its fabulously campy, irony-free honor. The international European song contest happens each year, and pits singers from each country in the European Television Union against one another for the best pop track. Broadcast around Europe and the former Soviet Bloc countries, Eurovision is the phenomenon that spawned both Abba and Celine Dion, so you know it’s good. Click through to meet this year’s winner — from Sweden, natch — and see some of the high-camp hijinks that happened during this year’s intense competition.

Travel Diary: Paris, Je T’aime!

As I mentioned last week, I’m spending the month exploring Europe and I’ll be chronicling my journey for The Frisky. My boyfriend Nick and I began our trip in Paris. We spent a few days there on our own and then my mom and my brother Devin joined us. Well, they tried. Unfortunately, their first experience with the Paris Metro system played out like a formulaic sequel to “Home Alone:” Devin boarded a train and the doors closed before my mom could get on. Neither of them had a cellphone or directions, so they spent the next two and a half hours riding trains back and forth through the city trying to find each other while Nick and I waited for them at the Metro station — terrified that they’d been abducted — and chain-eating croissants to cope with the stress. Luckily Devin found a kindly Scottish farmer to guide him home and my mom found a payphone under the Eiffel Tower, but wow, what a crazy day (apparently my family has bad luck with trains). More thoughts on Paris after the jump… Keep reading »

Penthouse Launches 3D Porn Channel In Europe

Damn, Europe gets all the good stuff, like a Wii game about spanking and much-anticipated 3D porn. Waaaahhh! Yesterday Penthouse, the esteemed shameless smut rag, launched a high definition 3D channel, which runs from 11 p.m to 5 a.m. and promises 30 hours of new hardcore and softcore pornography a month. Hustler is expected to launch a 3D adult channel later this month as well … which probably means Charlie Sheen will never leave the house ever again. I never though I would say this, Penthouse and Hustler, but thank you.

“Jersey Shore” Cast Is Moving To Italy

Mamma mia! The cast of “Jersey Shore” is moving to Italy to film season four, presumably so Ronnie can see what the inside of an Italian jail looks like, too. Sources tell TMZ that MTV is already scouting locations in Italy and working to get cast members their visas. Apparently, a dinner with Vinny’s “authentic Italian relatives” is already lined up, too. Get President Obama on the line … this qualifies as an international emergency, right? [TMZ.com] Keep reading »

Will MTV’s “Skins” Run Afoul Of Child Porn Laws?

I smell a publicity stunt: MTV is worried future episodes of “Skins,” its new show about the hormone-laden escapades of a posse of Baltimore teens, will run afoul of child pornography laws because of too much sexxxy sex. “Skins,” which debuted on Monday, is an Americanized version of a popular show in Britain; however, the UK — and Europe in general — have much more liberal attitudes towards sexuality, especially in youngsters. Most of the actors or non-actors on MTV’s scripted programs or reality shows are adults over the age of 18. However, some of the actors on “Skins” are as young as 15 and acting out sexual acts onscreen could, by some interpretations of the laws, be seen as trying to arouse viewers. (Granted, I’m not an expert on the laws regarding this subject.) Keep reading »
