Have you noticed any of your local vintage stores closing up shop lately? In a bit of an unexpected move, it’s apparently the little guys who are pushing out the bigger ones, largely due to independent Etsy sellers and eBay listings. Why? Shoppers have certainly become more fond of vintage shopping in the past few years, but can find far better prices online (“The prices on Etsy kill me,” says one shop owner) as well as more detailed product information.
Which do you prefer for vintage shopping? Finding bargains online or seeing a product in person and having the store experience? [Crain's] Keep reading »
After she relocated from New York City to Los Angeles, 30-year-old Courtney Prince created the Doloris Petunia line and started hawking her bejeweled wares on Etsy. From chunky statement necklaces to the rhinestone-encrusted friendship cuff you see here, these pieces are for the girl who isn’t afraid to shine a little. There’s a multicolored, crystal-embellished peacock hair clip. Or you can order a custom-made wrist cuff in pink, peach, or any other colors you desire. [Kingdom of Style] Keep reading »
We suppose weird, ahem, we mean original engagement rings are the thing du jour with all you “non-conformist” couples. Most of the accessories we see stay in the realm of design, but this bear tooth engagement ring is quite possibly more creepy. (The ones pictured are done in brass, but we were sure there was a real tooth version up earlier. Guess it sold out!) The inspiration behind the ring, by Etsy designer Blood Milk, is actually quite romantic. It was created out of a Grimm fairy tale in which Snow White shows kindness to a bear (who is really an imprisoned prince). After the spell is broken, the prince goes on to marry Snow White, so the ring symbolizes her love for the man even in his bear form. Which might as well just be a modern translation where the bear is played by the Joaquin Phoenixes of the world. What do you think of this animal tooth-inspired engagement ring? Too creepy? Or sweet in principle? [Etsy] Keep reading »
When you find an awesome, affordable Etsy seller, you often feel like you’ve just won the jackpot, which is exactly the case with Noble Town Vintage’s jewelry. Re-purposed and revived, the designs are anything but overdone. Think chevron charms dangling on long necklaces, earrings with dainty brass cubes hanging from chains, art deco plaques, or chunky amethyst stones paired with worn-in chain. Our favorite: the vintage brass bar necklace, which features a horizontal bar between two strands with a choice of quirky pendants.

Today in randomness on Etsy.com: check out this human thumb-shaped USB drive. The gadget is made from flesh-tinted urethane and based on a rubber cast of the creator’s own thumb. Um, ew? Anyone else think a human thumb coming out of your laptop is a bit too Salvador Dali-ish for real life? [Etsy.com] Keep reading »
“Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks may be famous, but she’s still willing to lend her beauty and talent to her friends. Hendricks is a featured model on a friend’s Etsy shop, modeling this $130 wool scarf. Designer Tamara Mello sells her wares on Etsy under the names Blackbird Design House and Madre de Olivia, but she was also a bridesmaid in Hendricks’ wedding last year. Guess Hendricks was returning the favor? [The Wrap] Keep reading »

Racked takes readers on a nifty pictorial tour through model, singer, and wife-of-Jack Black Karen Elson’s vintage shop in Nashville, Tennessee, Venus and Mars. The store, which is located in a house, is filled with a cornucopia of eclectic old school items, from cheetah clutches to men’s suspenders, day-glo jumpers to thrift store art, summer hats to gold pumps. The showroom, which opened in 2008, is the brainchild of Elson and Amy Patterson. “The aim of the store is to encourage shoppers to think that vintage isn’t just an old hand-me-down,” Elson explains, “but a one-of-a-kind garment with a wonderful story.” You don’t have to make the trek to Nashville to shop there, though; they’ve got a Venus and Mars storefront on Etsy.
