If you’ve turned on a TV since 1998, you know how obsessed we are with hard-ons. Since the little blue pill appeared more than a dozen years ago, countless imitators of varying legitimacy and effectiveness have hit the market. Ads for drugs that promise to cure erectile dysfunction run nonstop during sporting events, and the sales of these medications generate hundreds of millions of dollars a year. We watch these ads and pop these pills without ever considering that the periodic inability to get an erection could be the best thing that could happen to our sex lives.

Dear Wendy: “My Boyfriend Has Erectile Dysfunction”

I’ve been dating this guy for the past six months and he’s been experiencing some problems with erectile dysfunction ever since we started having sex, about two months ago. He’s in his mid-20s and obviously not the target demographic, so it’s hit him very hard and really damaged his self-confidence. He’s been to the doctor and has an appointment with a specialist in a couple of weeks. I’ve really tried to be supportive and understanding about the whole thing, but the nature of our relationship has changed. We still have sexual contact, even if he doesn’t necessarily get off or get hard. We work part-time together and when I see him at work, he’s very attentive, but the problem is he rarely contacts me anymore outside of work and when he does he says strange things like “I don’t deserve you,” or “I miss you,” but doesn’t ask to see me until I bring it up. We see each other once a week at most at the moment, but he used to want to see me all the time. I’m bloody confused about what to do. I’ve backed off quite a bit to give him some space but I don’t want to get hurt over this. — ED Doesn’t Spell END

Awkward Erectile Dysfunction Commercials Might Disappear From TV

Representative Jim Moran has a problem with erectile dysfunction. We’re not sure whether he suffers from ED, but he doesn’t like those TV ads for Viagra and Cialis. Last month, this Virginia democrat introduced a bill that would prohibit any ED ads from airing on broadcast radio and TV between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. because they’re “indecent.” Moran says he has had a number of people tell him they’re tired of having to explain to their young kids what erectile dysfunction is whenever one of the commercials comes on TV. One CNN.com reader commented that the ads don’t just make for uncomfortable conversations with children: “It is not only for the children and young people, but it is also embarrassing for mixed company adults.     Does Alcohol Make Men Better In The Bedroom?

    The next time your man blames booze on his inability to, uh, rise to the occasion, you might want to tell him about this recent survey that suggests otherwise. Researchers in Australia discovered that alcohol actually improves rather than hinders a man’s performance in the bedroom. In a study of 1,580 men, drinkers reported 30% fewer problems than those who don’t booze it up. Guys who had four drinks, five days a week — an amount that might raise eyebrows in some circles, but qualifies as “moderate” in Australia — reported the fewest instances of erectile dysfunction. Apparently, even “binge drinkers” reported less trouble getting it up than those who have just one drink a day or none at all. The study suggests a “favorable association between low-risk drinking and positive erectile function.” In other words, “whiskey d**k” may just be something a guy should aspire to.
