Maybe I’m just a sexist pig, but I fail to get a boner for this allegedly sexist Equinox billboard in Bethesda, Maryland, that has a group of mothers petitioning for its removal. The billboard depicts an attractive young woman, fully clothed in a dress and heels, crawling on a pool table while she shoots a ball with a cue; the tag line, “Dexterity,” is obviously a reference to the fact that she’s bent over in what is both a billiards and doggie style position. The image was photographed by Terry Richardson, known for both his provocative photos and for being a perv with the women he shoots.

I’m on the fence about this ad for Equinox, an upscale gym with locations in Los Angeles, New York City, and elsewhere. On the one hand, I’m not keen on the juxtaposition within advertisement — that the woman herself is a “joy ride” (despite the fact she is freezing in that outfit) or that riding a motorcycle in a bikini would be a joy ride (again, despite the fact she is freezing in that outfit). It’s another unrealistic portrayal of women’s bodies — not the physical body itself, but the unreal suggestion that she’s so “hot” she’s not losing her tuchus to frostbite.
However, I’m not bothered by the fact a woman in an advertisement for a gym is wearing a bikini, or that her face/identity is obscured by her motorcycle helmet. Even though there are other cases of advertising where a woman’s body is used to gratuitously sell a product — many alcohol ads, for instance — I think a gym advertisement is a pretty legit reason.

Anyway, because I’m a nerd, this morning I Googled “Natalie Portman Equinox” just for kicks and I came up with this Craigslist posting by some gym bunny asking Nat on a date. It says:
“You’re Natalie Portman. I was running on the treadmill at Equinox today…you were with your friend…i think you kind of checked me out a little…thought you were cute, would love to grab a drink.
Poor boob! Natalie wasn’t checking you out, honey. She was afraid because you were staring at her. Keep reading »
