Yesterday afternoon, HBO finally broke the bad news — they had officially canceled the critically acclaimed show “Enlightened.” The show, starring Laura Dern and written by Mike White, suffered in the ratings during its two seasons, but had a strong and loyal fan base who had spent the last few months taking to the interwebs to urge the network to give the show another season. Alas, it seems it was not meant to be. The second season concluded a few weeks ago, and White purposefully wrote the final episode with the possible cancelation in mind. Ideally, the show would be renewed, but if not, the second season ending tied things up for Amy Jellicoe in a somewhat neatish bow.

I came into watching “Enlightened” late — way late. I binge-watched every episode over the course of a week, and then watched the  season — now series — finale with everyone else. I fell madly in love with this show for its idealism and its depth and I’m so, so, so disappointed it won’t be coming back for a third season. I’m not alone — my Twitter timeline is filled with devastated and angry tweets from loyal “Enlightened” fans. What are we to do now that we’ll never know whether Amy triumphs against Abbadon, or gets back together with Levi (Luke Wilson), or whether Levi maintains his sobriety, or Tyler and Eileen’s relationship survives the fallout of his involvement in Amy’s whistleblowing? And what about Dougie? I was just starting to really love Dougie! Sigh.

Clearly, we need to figure how to cope with this news. I have some ideas for how to deal with the cancellation of “Enlightened”… Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Amy From “Enlightened”

I started watching HBO’s “Enlightened” for the same reason I’ve started watching pretty much all of my favorite shows: Amelia was like, “Dude, you HAVE to watch this show.” And as usual, she was totally right, because within three episodes this show had completely stolen my heart. I love it so much. It’s a breath of fresh air. If you don’t watch it yet, here are 10 reasons you should start, but if you’re already watching (Good! Keep it up!), then you know the main character, Amy Jellicoe, played by the amazing Laura Dern, is always striving for a better, brighter, lighter life–and she makes sure to dress the part. Want to steal her sunny style? We’ve got all the pieces (for $100 or less!) after the jump… Keep reading »

10 Reasons You Should Be Watching “Enlightened”

In the past six months, anyone mentioning HBO is usually talking about hipster wunderkind Lena Dunham’s “Girls.”  Obviously, they’re turning the channel as soon as the Dunham-saturated credits start rolling, and I suspect they’re probably leaving a bit hungry:  “Girls” is a great appetizer for the rich and hearty entrée that is “Enlightened,” the much less-buzzed-about show that follows at 9:30 p.m. EST.  I like to think of “Enlightened,” the brain child of Mike White and Laura Dern, as the hot, sad widower you meet in a tavern on a rainy night, while “Girls” is that guy that got to be “The Bachelor” twice.

Sadly, instead of both of these quality shows being touted and discussed equally, the “shocking” nudity and “brave” if not gratuitous sexuality featured on Dunham’s show has overshadowed the quietly profound gem that airs right after, and is quite sexy in its own way.

Yada yada, It’s my favorite show on television and it really deserves a thorough look-see! Why? I’ll tell you why… Keep reading »
