Squish Of The Day: Cheetah Cubs Born At National Zoo

Oh, hello. Were you trying to get something done today? Too bad, because I’ve now thwarted your attempt at productivity with this too cute for words pic of a couple of baby cheetahs just born at the Smithsonian National Zoo. These little guys are the surviving two of the four that were born to their mama in late April. Sadly, their other brother and sister didn’t make it. Right now, they’re being hand-raised by zookeepers until they believe they can thrive on their own. That’s important, because cheetahs are considered an endangered species — between 8,000 and 12,000 are believed to exist in the wild. [Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute]

As you probably know, I feel a certain affinity for tigers (and sweaters with tigers on them, ahem). So when I saw this video of Shadow giving birth to her cub, I had to watch. It’s slightly bloody, sure, but hello? Tiger cubs! Plus, watching the video reminds me that tigers are becoming an endangered species thanks to hunting and human development of their habitat, so each cute little cub counts.   • People who are in love are less likely to cheat, according to a study at UCLA. “Feeling love for your romantic partner appears to make everybody else less attractive,” psychologist Gian Gonzaga said. Sad but obvious news, especially because it means that if someone cheats on you, you were not only cheated on but you’re also not loved. [AFP]
  • The Sharp Park Golf Course has not been allowed to drain a puddle for two years because it is a breeding ground for the threatened red-legged frog and the endangered San Francisco garter snake. This year, however, the frogs’ breeding was so successful that biologists say the golf course can finally to pump away the water. [SF Gate]
