Alleged Details On Lara Logan’s Assault In Egypt Emerge

“60 Minutes” reporter Lara Logan has still not spoken publicly about being attacked on February 11 in Egypt‘s Tahrir Square while she reported on civil unrest there, but alleged details have emerged in an Australian newspaper about the physical and sexual assault Logan endured. It has really, really annoyed me reading internet commenters who have parried back and forth about Logan being “raped” (usually while discussing whether she put herself in the position for such a thing to happen), when, in fact, “rape” is a complete assumption. In its statement regarding the attack on Lara Logan and her TV crew, all that CBS News said regarding the assault was, “In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating …” People made their own inferences that “sexual assault” meant “rape,” when, in fact, it appears it did not. Today In Baby News: A Kid Named “Facebook” And A Wainwright/Cohen Love Child

Congrats to Facebook, which officially has its first namesake. An Egyptian man named his baby girl Facebook Jamal Ibrahim to express his gratitude for the role the social networking site played in the revolution. Today’s Lady News: CBS News’ Lara Logan Beaten, Sexually Assaulted In Egypt

  • CBS correspondent Lara Logan was beaten and sexually assaulted in Egypt’s Tahrir Square on February 11 after she, her “60 Minutes” team, and their security were attacked. Logan was reportedly rescued by a group of women and 20 Egyptian soldiers. Logan returned to the United States the next morning and is currently in the hospital recovering. We have her in our thoughts and wish her a full recovery. [CBS News]
  • Italy’s Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi will be tried on charges of sex with a 17-year-old prostitute, a judge ruled yesterday. Thousands of Italians protested across the country on Sunday against Berlusconi’s alleged diddlings, while he maintains the accusations are “groundless.” Apparently he’ll stand trial before three female judges, too!   • Veterans who were sexually assaulted by other servicemembers filed a lawsuit against the U.S. military (specifically U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and his predecessor, Donald Rumsfeld) today with accusations it is too lax about pursuing sexual assaults. In a statement, a Pentagon spokesperson acknowledged the military had “work to do.” [BBC]

Today’s Lady News: Egypt Wants To Ban A $30 Fake Virginity Kit

  • Egyptian lawmakers have called for a ban on importing the Artificial Virginity Hymen kit from China, a $30 kit that leaks a blood-like substance when inserted and broken, allowing women to fool men into thinking that they’re virgins. [Fox News]—Hmm, how about a ban on the degrading notion that a woman is only valuable if she hasn’t had sex before? Just a thought!
  • President Obama included “same sex couples” in a speech last week when he declared Sept. 28 “Family Day,” but some gay activists say they’re not impressed and want him to be a stronger advocate for LGBT families. [L.A. Times]

This week, Barack Obama headed to Egypt with a pretty big mission in mind: smoothing over relations between the United States and the Muslim World. The pinnacle of his trip—a speech at Cairo University yesterday afternoon. In his speech, he emphasized the need for tolerance, not confrontation, between peoples, genders and religions in our increasingly interdependent world and called out for global cooperation as the only way to solve the problems we all currently face. Love Can Make A Man Do Crazy Things, Like Chop Off His Penis

Parents just don’t understand. Back in high school, my dad dissed a dude with green dreads who came to pick me up for a date. Pops just wouldn’t let my knight in shining Doc Martens take me to the movies. It was totally embarrassing and infuriating, so, in retaliation, I dyed my hair bright red. Ha, take that! But now I’m beginning to think I’m not really that bad ass. Over the weekend, a 25-year-old Egyptian man took rebellion to a whole new level — crotch level, that is. The man lives in Qena, an impoverished and very old school region in the south of Egypt, where marriage is seen as a contract rather than an eternal union with a soul mate. This young guy, who comes from a wealthy family, fell in love with one of the regular people. After two years of his father refusing to let him marry the lady from a lower class, the man lowered his pants and chopped off his own penis. Ouch! That’s love? Though he was rushed to the hospital, doctors weren’t able to reattach his member. Now that the son has shown he’s got, um, balls, will his parents cut him off completely? [Boston Globe]

Hatshepsut, The Cross-Dressing Pharaoh

If you haven’t noticed, we’re a bit obsessed with women throughout history. National Women’s History Month may be over, but we can’t help but to keep highlighting interesting women from the past. My sister got me a subscription to National Geographic for Christmas, and the April issue introduced me to Hatshepsut, a female pharaoh who ruled Egypt form 1479 to 1458 B.C. Since it’s now 2009 A.D. and the U.S. still hasn’t had a female president, you can imagine that it was a pretty big deal for Hatshepsut to rule back then.

The pharaoh’s body was discovered two years ago, and we still don’t know much about her life, but what we do know is rather scandalous. Hatshepsut was the eldest daughter of Thutmose and Queen Ahmose. Because they believed so much in strengthening royal bloodlines, incest wasn’t a bad thing and Hatshepsut married her half-brother Thutmose II, producing one daughter with him. Thutmose II’s heir, however, was a son by another woman. Thutmose III was super young when his father died, so Hatshepsut stepped in to help him out. Keep reading »

    Gadgets: Ye Olde Speculum

    The gadget loving guys at Boing Boing have made a list of the Top 10: Gadgets That Go Inside You. While we have a favorite that rhymes with habit (coincidence, we think not), we actually learned something about the least sexy thing you can shove in your secret garden — the speculum. You may joke that medical tools seem like Medieval Times torture devices, but as it turns out, the simple metal machine that opens us ladies up has been used on women since before the Dark Ages. The speculum has been traced to scholarly writings in a Hebrew book called the Talmud that dates all the way back to Ancient Egypt, circa 1300 B.C.E. That means most of your biblical female heroines had this “technology” in their hoo-ha, too! Although it’s older than dirt, it wasn’t officially named till Roman times. A speculum specimen was even unearthed from the rubble at Pompeii. Can you image the look on the 19th Century archaeologists’ faces when they discovered a mummified woman and dusted off her va-jay-jay? There’s another history lesson here: Do not go to the gyno near an erupting volcano. But if you think the vaginal speculum makes you squirm, just keep in mind that there’s an anal one for dudes.
