Vivienne Westwood Wants You To Stop Buying Clothes

Most designers would never suggest that anyone quit shopping. After all, their businesses run according to the premise that the public will go out and buy new clothes every season. But that’s exactly what Vivienne Westwood wants you to do: stop purchasing things. She has a totally legitimate reason however, as this designer is thinking about the good of the environment, and not her bank statement. “We all have a part to play and if you engage with life, you will get a new set of values, get off the consumer treadmill and start to think and it is these great thinkers who will rescue the planet,” explained Vivienne. She’s suggesting that you only buy clothes when you absolutely need them, and attempt to stay away from buying things for six whole months, which is a long, long time for fashion enthusiasts. Sounds like she’s on the “fashion fast” we talked about earlier this week! [British Vogue] Keep reading »

Bamboo Fabrics Not As Eco-Friendly As You Think

Along with hemp and soy, bamboo has become a popular fabric source with the eco-friendly crowd. Perhaps seeing a brand that tells you an article of clothing is made from bamboo influences your purchase—you’re being environmentally conscious, right? Not quite, says The Wall Street Journal, which recently took a closer look at the bamboo fashion industry that has long been marketed with words like “sustainable” and “green.” Turns out, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has taken a stance against bamboo fibers, stating in a notice that they “are made using toxic chemicals in a process that releases pollutants into the air.”

While well-minded designers may look to bamboo because it has a fast regrowth rate, the processes necessary to create fabric aren’t “green” at all: “The bamboo used in textiles has to be heavily manipulated to go from stem to store. To create fabric, it’s chopped up and dissolved in toxic solvents—the same process that recycles wood scraps into viscose or rayon. Indeed, bamboo fabric technically is rayon.”

Wow. So, how many bamboo pieces in your closet are way less appealing now that they’re less wholesome and, as WSJ says, essentially made of rayon? [WSJ]

Nude Girls Sell All Kinds Of Things, Including Keds

Ronan Gregory, the guy behind Ronan, Edun and Loomstate, just teamed up with Barney’s CO-OP to put out a line of eco-friendly Keds that feature rather adorable prints and lace-less construction. But as darling as the shoes themselves are, the promo video may be even cuter. Admittedly, we’re not entirely sure what a naked, frolicking girl has to do with gym shoes, but we’re feeling this Loomstate for Keds promo anyway. We’re liking it so much, in fact, that we’re willing to make some allowances for the gratuitous skinny girl nudity and chalk it up to some sort of homage to nature. Yeah, anyway. Keep reading »
