Forget Kanye! Forget Taylor! Here’s Florence + the Machine performing “Dog Days Are Over” on the VMAs last night. The stage show was very over the top: Cirque du Soleil meets Burning Man at the Parthenon. The redheaded and barefooted one took home her first VMA award that evening for the “Dog Days” song, which you may recognize from the “Eat Pray Love” trailer, too. Not everyone is as lucky as Elizabeth Gilbert, of Eat Pray Love fame, to spend a year in exotic locales to recover from a bad breakup. As a 30-year-old New Yorker returning to singledom after a string of long-term relationships, I can only dream of consulting a Bali guru to show me the right path. With graduate school loans, rising rent, car payments and the need to hold on to my job in this shaky economy, the thought of getting away to reflect and restore seems out of reach and, in Gilbert’s case, very expensive. Whatever Happened To Elizabeth Gilbert’s Ex-Husband?

The Daily Beast brings up a good point today about the phenomenon that is “Eat, Pray, Love.” Writer Danielle Friedman asks, “What’s it like to be the guy whose heartbreak launched a multi-million-dollar feel-good franchise?” She tracked down Michael Cooper, Elizabeth Gilbert’s ex-husband, and discovered that he is now a public interest law scholar at the Georgetown University Law Center. He’s also remarried, to a Canadian diplomat, and has two young sons. However, he wasn’t interested in commenting on the movie, the book, or Elizabeth Gilbert in general.

Which is interesting, because last year he was contracted to write a rebuttal book. Keep reading »

“Drink Play F@#k” Is The Male Answer To “Eat Pray Love”

While a large portion of the female population is rushing out to see the film adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir, Eat Pray Love, comedy writer Andrew Gottlieb is hoping that men are at home reading his answer to it, Drink, Play, F**k. With Gilbert’s blessing, Gottlieb penned a satirical memoir, released in 2009, where fictional character Bob Sullivan roams the world after his marriage falls apart. Gottlieb asked himself, “What would a man do in this situation?” Answer: Sullivan goes to Ireland to drink, to Las Vegas to play, and to Thailand to bone. Okay, that’s hilarious. [NY Daily News]

We can’t wait to see “Eat Pray Love” tonight, but in the meantime, Dogeared is keeping us occupied. The jewelry company has a line of delicate trinkets and jewels in honor of the film. We’re particularly taken with this purple macrame bracelet. The bright purple color mixes up standard metal chain bracelets. Wear it alone, with your watch, or with a bunch of bangle bracelets. We couldn’t agree with the message more: “I deserve something beautiful.” That’s right.

Why Does Everyone Hate Julia Roberts?

Years ago, I had a friend who was an entertainment writer in Los Angeles. At one point, Julia Roberts was promoting whatever newly released blockbuster she was starring in, and my friend went to go interview her. At the time, she was still mostly considered to be America’s sweetheart. In the hotel meeting room, a half dozen journalists, including my friend, sat down at the table to interview her.
