15 Amazing Duct Tape Craft Projects

It turns out that we have something in common with 2011 Miss America winner Teresa Scanlan. She’s obsessed with using duct tape…for crafts and accessories that is. According to this New York Times article, Scanlan can’t get enough of the adhesive. She said, “I’ve made a duct tape skirt, shorts, a couple shirts and a dress is my next project … You know how they ask you what three things you’d want on a desert island? I’d only want one thing: duct tape. It’s all you need.”

Duct Tape Prom Dresses That Are Not Only Wearable But Fashionable

While most girls search for months to find the perfect prom dress, and even set up Facebook pages so there are no doubles, select teens get a little crafty for their big day. Instead of spending hours (and hundreds of dollars) at the mall, they stock up on duct tape and get to designing as part of the annual Stuck at Prom Contest hosted by Duck Brand. But this year’s a little different, since it’s the 10th anniversary. To make the celebration just a little bit more special, this year’s contest comes along with a major grand prize — $3,000 in scholarship money for you and your date. So, while teens were creative before, it’s an entirely new game now. The designs of the top 10 couples currently in the running range from a “Singing in the Rain” number to a paint-splattered design to an Old Victorian-inspired look — all of which are way more innovative than anything I (or MacGyver) could dream up with a roll of duct tape. Crave: Poketo Duct Tape Wallet

Duct tape wallets usually sound like a brave idea, but tend to turn out sticky, ugly, and rather useless. We love this Poketo Duct Tape Wallet because at $20 a pop, not only is it affordable and indestructible, but oh-so-good-looking. The wallets are designed by artists from all over the world, and each is screen printed with a different work of art. We almost like reading the bios of the artists as much as buying the actual product. The name comes from one of the creators’ grandmothers and her mispronunciation of the word “pocket.” Thus Poketo, or as the grandmother would say “poh-kay-toe,” was born. These wallets fit right into our pockets for our own personal traveling art-show entertainment. [$20, Poketo] Keep reading »

Girl Scouts Host First Ever Duct Tape Fashion Show

As a born and bred New Yorker, I never had the inclination to join the Girl Scouts and learn the necessary wilderness skills to survive the jungle otherwise known as Central Park. Just because I can’t figure out how to start a fire by rubbing rocks together and lack the super cute uniform does not mean I can’t appreciate Girl Scout Cookies. My addiction to thin mints is a real problem. If the cookies didn’t already earn my undying devotion for the Girl Scouts, then their first ever duct tape fashion show did. More info, after the jump… Keep reading »
