Flesh-Eating Drug, Krokodil, Making Its Way Across The United States

Use of flesh-eating drug "krokodil" spreads in US

We are not discussing crocodiles here, but given that even the most cursory, SafeSearch-on Googling of krokodil yields some of the most vile images you will ever see (DON’T DO IT!!!!), this stock photo of a crocodile will more than suffice. The flesh-eating intravenous drug does, in fact, get its name from the animal, as it causes a scalelike gangrene similar to the hide of the aquatic beast before progressing into abscesses and gangrene.

However, while crocodiles are kind of cute in photos, krokodil is decidedly NOT. It first rose to popularity in Russia (“krokodil” is Russian for “crocodile”) at least a decade ago due to heroin shortage, and while its main ingredient is a painkiller called desomorphine, it isn’t this component that causes the “rotting from the inside-out” effect of the drug that produces a high “three times stronger than heroin” — rather, the deadly side effects arise as a result of street chemists using codeine tablets mixed with substances like gasoline, paint thinner, or lighter fluid. If you’ve been hanging out in the ladyblogosphere, you’ve heard of Cat Marnell. Or maybe you know her as “Cat Marnell, ugh.” Cat Marnell was — until last week — the health/beauty editor at xoJane. More pertinently, though, she was an open, unabashed, self-described “pillhead” who frequently wrote about her drug use and abuse online. (As well as some other things.) She had been sent to rehab in April at the insistence of xoJane’s publishers. The New York Post reported on Friday that Marnell left xoJane, seemingly of her own choice, because she would rather pass the summer “on the rooftop of Le Bain looking for shooting stars and smoking angel dust with my friends.”

This morning, NYMag.com published an interview with Marnell with more of the same Cat-ariffic quotes. “I’ve always gone to rehab for the wrong reasons.” “ I’m just a fucking freak show.” “I spent Christmas Eve with Jane [Pratt] and Courtney Love.” ”I had drug bags pasted on the walls [of my apartment] because I collected dope bags.” And she goes into great detail about how she ended up parting ways with xoJane, which has something to do with losing her pills, crashing, her Internet being shut off so she couldn’t write posts, and forgetting her cell phone at the office.

Compelling reading? Cat always is. It’s not exactly a secret that people read her on xoJane for that ZOMG what the fuck did she just say now soundbite, not her questionable health or beauty advice (though her various product recommendations did fly off shelves). But as long as Cat Marnell’s been tearing up my RSS feed — and that of every other blog-reading woman I know — I’ve felt uncomfortable with rubbernecking this drug addict. Keep reading »

Coco Chanel’s Bisexuality, Drug-Use & Nazi Ties Come To Light In New Biography

Coco Chanel didn’t lay the foundation for her eponymous fashion empire by coloring within the lines and following the rules. So it’s not surprising that the deceased designer’s closet still holds a few skeletons–along with vintage little black Chanel dresses. In her book Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life, which will be released in the fall, biographer Lisa Chaney opens the door on Coco’s secrets. Chaney claims to have proof that Coco embraced bisexuality and drug use, and had an affair with Salvador Dali while he was married. By 2011 standards, these allegations aren’t particularly shocking, but another one might have a few fashion folks changing their opinions of the designer. Chaney also claims to have accessed documents from the Swiss Federal Archives that prove Coco’s German paramour, Hans Günther von Dincklage, spied for the Nazis during World War II. It’s unclear whether Coco knew he was a spy, but let’s not forget that she did live in neutral Switzerland for some time … perhaps to avoid any proceedings against her? This isn’t the first biography of Coco, and it probably won’t be the last, but Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life might be the most controversial and revealing.

Do You Lie About Your Drug Use?

Teens lie. That’s nothing new. But a new study found that teens lie rather profusely when it comes to their drug use. According to researchers from Wayne State University and the National Institute on Drug Abuse, teens lied about their drug use, even when hair samples proved otherwise. Apparently, it was more important for these teens to report drug use that they believed was consistent with their peers than to be truthful. Of course, it’s unlikely that a heroin addict is going to want to be forthcoming about their drug use if everyone else in the room has only smoked marijuana. And that got us thinking: do adults lie about drug use in the same way kids do? Depending on whom you’re friends with, illicit drug use can be either a badge of honor or a definite taboo. Have you ever felt the need to tone down or talk up your drug use to fit in? Keep reading »

The Latest Crystal Meth Confession: Andre Agassi

Another day, another celebrity confesses to once being a meth head. Earlier this week, it was Jodie Sweetin of “Full House” who came clean about her drug use. Now tennis legend Andre Agassi is confessing that, back in the late ’90s, he used meth, too. In his autobiography (out Nov. 9), Agassi explains that he was stressed over not playing well and his rocky relationship with Brooke Shields. He was sitting on the couch with his assistant, who asked Andre if he wanted to get high.
