A Wine That’ll Make You Want To Take Off Her Clothes (And Then Redress Her In A Cute Outfit)

When I’m buying a bottle of wine, I hate to say it, but I’m a sucker for cute packaging. Red Bicyclette anyone? However, that winemaker has a worthy adversary in Some Young PunksDrink ‘n’ Stick, because its label isn’t just cute, it’s interactive. A bottle of Drink ‘n’ Stick (which has gotten good reviews for a couple different vintages) features a pin-up girl in lingerie, but she comes with a sheet of paper doll-style clothes so drinkers can dress, undress, and redress her. There are even accessories like scarves and bows! Now you know how we’ll be spending our Friday night. [NOTCOT.org] Keep reading »

Weird Food News: Blue M&Ms Can Heal Your Spine And More

  • Everyone always goes for the green M&Ms (horndogs!), but perhaps you should consider reaching for the blue. Turns out, the compound “Brilliant Blue G,” which makes blue M&Ms blue, can be used to treat spinal cord injuries. Injecting just the right amount of this dye appears to make recovery much faster. The downside? The stuff makes your skin bright blue for a little while. How Smurfy. [Telegraph UK]
  • Coca-Cola’s newest drink “Vio” is one part milk and one part seltzer water—and we’re just not sure how that combo could possibly end well. Even more questionable—it comes in flavors like citrus burst, peach mango, tropical colada, and very berry. It has no artificial crap in it but, um, it’s carbonated milk. Gross. [Daily Mail UK]
  • The New York Times is up in arms because a number of the characters in the newest “Harry Potter” flick are shown gulping down butterbeer. They say the scenes are all about underaged drinking, but Warner Bros claims that’s “open to different interpretations.” My interpretation? This is like saying root beer is bad news. [NY Times]

Bottoms Up! Drink Away Recession Blues

In rain or shine, economic ups or downs…people will hit the bars. The question is where can you find a bar that doesn’t exactly have set prices? Well apparently, the Dow Jones Bar. After hearing about this “great” spot from some of my new yorker friends I decided to investigate. Not only does New York have their own Dow Jones bar but forms of it are popping up in places from Barcelona and England to Kuala Lumpur. It works like this: prices will go up and down on screens depending on how many people are buying at the time. If a man next to you just bought a rum and coke, the price will go up andm if you’re not too tipsy to pay attention you can still strategically buy up all the cheaper drinks. Although it depends which bar you are in, Barcelona’s Dow Jones rigs its machine sot hat every half an hour the market crashes, orange lights go off and drinks drop to their minimum price which of course makes everyone run back and buy another round. The good news is, game or not, the bar never lets the price of drinks get too high to afford even if it is good business. Now, I’m not too sure if alcohol and stock exchanges are a good mix but in this recession, it may be a smart gamble. Finally a bar where you really can call the shots. No. 5 Champagne Cocktail Inspired By Iconic Perfume

Tony Conigliaro based the No. 5 Champagne Cocktail on a famous perfume from a Parisian fashion house, which you should have guessed by now. He came up with the concept for the cocktail after realizing that the perfume-making process is similar to the way cocktails are made. First, he studied how that particular Chanel perfume is made. Then, he realized a sugar cube in the champagne was the perfect way to bring the notes to the top of the drink. It took two years-worth of trial and error to develop the cocktail, which was sampled at “The Bar with No Name” launch in Angel Islington, London. The No. 5 Champagne Cocktail is served in a wide-brim, bespoke flute to allow extra room for the bubbles to release. Conigliaro is the ambassador for French brand Merlet fruit liqueurs, and he knows his stuff when it comes to cocktails. He told Dazed Digital that the biggest cocktail myth is that martinis should be “shaken, not stirred.” Contrary to James Bonds’ tastes, he says, a martini will be too soggy if it’s shaken, instead of smooth and silky which is a result of stirring. Drunkorexia: The Liquid Lunch Diet

Drinking on an empty stomach is a good way to get the maximum buzz for your bucks, but it’s not exactly an effective way to calorie count. A new diet fad known as drunkorexia, where women choose to spend their calories on alcohol rather than food, is sweeping the U.K. and America. With beverages like a glass of wine weighing in with the same amount of calories as a light lunch, some ladies are choosing to be light-headed over a Pinot Noir than just a small salad. Professor Jane Treasure, chief of the eating disorder unit at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, says this phenomenon is especially dangerous for women’s health because it’s “…the combination of empty calories with no nutritional value and the risky behavior that goes with being drunk.” So, what do the docs recommend if you want to party responsibly? Eat well-balanced meals and drink low-cal alcoholic beverages, like a vodka and soda. Plus, while you’re downing drinks, you can burn off a few extra calories by getting down on the dance floor. Hey, Macarena! Aye! [Telegraph U.K.]
