Social Media Has Its Own Drinking Game, And It’s Kind Of Scary

Don't Try This At Home!

Social media’s latest nightmare hashtag, #neknominating, is something of an interwebs drinking game. One could compare it to the boozy version of Rickrolling, except unlike an ’80s jam, Neknominating can get you killed.

Neknominating typically involves a group of bros filming themselves necking/chugging drinks via some outrageous stunt and encouraging others to do the same. When they post the footage on their social networks, they nominate a friend to join in the game and challenge them to top their antics. One Facebook user puts it pretty aptly in his description:

“Neck your drink. Nominate another. Don’t break the chain, don’t be a dick. The social drinking game for social media! #neknominate. Drink Responsible.”

A video clip of a dude drinking beer out of a toilet bowl is definitely vom-worthy, but not too far off from what you’d expect to see at your local frat house, right? As the clips go on, however, the stunts get worse and worse. Jumping off a bridge and lighting your clothes on fire isn’t quite so entertaining as it is cringeworthy. Keep reading »

Another year, another MTV Video Music Awards show. Oh, the irony. When was, after all, the last time you saw an actual music video played on that channel? Even MTV’s more or less dropped the ruse, no longer referring to themselves as “Music Television.” But still, the VMAs persist. And we love it!

That’s why we’ve created this helpful drinking game, to make sure you don’t miss a moment of the action during tonight’s show. But please, just don’t get, you know, too wasted over Justin Bieber’s career choices.

And follow us on Twitter, too! We’ll be tweeting up a storm — you can follow Amelia (@xoamelia), Julie (@havethehabit), and The Frisky (@TheFrisky) for all your VMA needs!

Hollywood’s months-long celebration of itself comes to a close this Sunday with the Academy Awards, and we’ll be tweeting and drinking through the whole thing, as per usual. Starting at 6 p.m. EST, The Frisky (@TheFrisky on Twitter) will be tweeting the red carpet arrivals along with our fellow Buzz sites Celebuzz and Socialite Life using the hashtag #OscarBuzz and all you have to do is follow along to get all of our thoughts on what the stars are wearing. But for extra fun, have our Oscars Drinking Game rules handy — Julie (@havethehabit) and I (@xoamelia) will also be tweeting and drinking throughout the whole awards show. A grand time is sure to be had by all! See you Sunday!

Play The Frisky’s Golden Globes Drinking Game This Sunday!

Awards shows are a dime a dozen, but we like the Golden Globes because all the nominees are drinking and eating while the show goes on, and are generally sloshed by the time they get on stage. That, plus Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are hosting this year’s awards, which means it’s going to be extra funny. Tina and Amy know how pat and stale these things can be, and they’ve created their own drinking game. We are a tad partial to ours, only because it’s a bit more specific — more like a scavenger hunt than a drinking game. Or like a scavenger hunt with your TV. And booze. (The Golden Globes air Sunday January 13 at 8ET/5PT on NBC. )

How are you going to get through the next 24 hours of election news, voting and results? If you’re anything like us, you’ll need a stiff drink or three to watch the votes roll in tonight. We are nervous as heck, and this drinking game should help us, and you, relax a little bit. Until the cold, harsh light of Wednesday morning hits us, anyway.
