Taking Festive Fashion To New Heights

It’s A Cool Dress Made From Computer Wires, But Can You Wear It?

This dress, made from old computer wires, is by designer Tina Sparkles for the Keep Austin Beautiful Recycled Fashion Show. The “Project Runway” enthusiast in me thinks it looks awesome. But the practical side of me thinks constructing clothing that’s unwearable in the real world from repurposed “e-waste” isn’t really that green, considering how you are using resources like electricity while you make it. Sparkles calls the dress an “art project” and says it took her all summer to build. But lucky for us, she also has a book called Little Green Dresses with 50 far more practical patterns for re-used/recycled apparel. And if you’re interested in cutting back on your own “e-waste,” Sparkles offers more info on her website.

One Dress, 3 Covers, Big Drama

Miu Miu has some explaining to do. Somehow, the exact same dress from the Fall 2010 runway just appeared on the three different magazine covers, meaning the editors at British Vogue, British Elle, AND W are none too pleased! Now technically, there are a few variations in the design: while the colors are different, the style is the same, but the coincidence is making editors and PR girls squirm. Here’s the breakdown: Eva Mendes graces the July 2010 issue of W in a yellow version of the Fall 2010 design, Freja Beha Erichsen dons a tangerine style for the August 2010 issue of British Vogue, and Lily Allen sports a lilac variate for the cover of British Elle. The interesting thing is, public relations offices work very hard so that this situation never occurs, taking great care to send different options to magazines. Somehow either the system broke down or editors just were beyond obsessed with this one dress; one thing’s for sure — this dress is going to sell out in no time. [Guardian] Keep reading »

Duct Tape Prom Dresses That Are Not Only Wearable But Fashionable

While most girls search for months to find the perfect prom dress, and even set up Facebook pages so there are no doubles, select teens get a little crafty for their big day. Instead of spending hours (and hundreds of dollars) at the mall, they stock up on duct tape and get to designing as part of the annual Stuck at Prom Contest hosted by Duck Brand. But this year’s a little different, since it’s the 10th anniversary. To make the celebration just a little bit more special, this year’s contest comes along with a major grand prize — $3,000 in scholarship money for you and your date. So, while teens were creative before, it’s an entirely new game now. The designs of the top 10 couples currently in the running range from a “Singing in the Rain” number to a paint-splattered design to an Old Victorian-inspired look — all of which are way more innovative than anything I (or MacGyver) could dream up with a roll of duct tape. Can Maxi Skirts Ever Work For Short Women?

As an individual who is faced with the dilemma of being vertically challenged — I’m super short, 5’1″ to be exact — certain fashion trends just don’t work for me. Pants are pretty much impossible and even if I liked the harem style, I can totally forget about ever looking good in them. In fact, for months I was convinced that I shouldn’t even try to make a maxi dress work because I would just end up looking like a child covered in piles of fabric. Eventually, desperation mixed with jealousy and a quick shopping trip lead to my first maxi dress purchase last summer. Now I’m in love and believe I have mastered the art of maxi dresses for shorties, though I’d hardly say that I’m willing to venture into the world of harem pants. Then, my world was rocked when I saw the Olsen twins strutting around town in maxi skirts! Keep reading »

Here’s Your Chance to Steal Carrie Bradshaw’s Wardrobe

Everyone knows that Sarah Jessica Parker’s wardrobe for her character Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City is beyond enviable. From the high heels to the brilliant accessories to the odd little pieces that stylist Patricia Field works in, each and every item is a gem. For most, many of these pieces are impossible to own given their high price tags and designer names. But now, with the upcoming release of the second film, a boutique in London called Start London, is giving away ONE Halston Heritage dress. If you’ve seen the trailer, its the light pink floaty number that Carrie wears along with a silver turban. Here’s the problem – you’ll have to be the perfect size—a 10—for the dress to fit, but we say, good luck to all! [Grazia] Keep reading »

Is That Your Dress I Smell?

The world just can’t get enough high-tech fashion. From the LED dress to this light-up Dandelion number, geeks all over are putting their spin on style. Next up is a dress that claims to feel your emotions. Jenny Tillotson, a British artist and designer, created the dress which comes with its very own circulatory system. In actuality, it is a bit creepy, but the idea sounds pretty cool. The dress senses inner emotions and will emit a fragrance based on a feeling. So if you’re sick, the scent will be eucalyptus, and if you’re lusting after someone, it’ll be pheromones, creating your own smell bubble around you. We’re not quite sold on its wearability though. Would You Wear This: A Paint-By-Numbers Dress?

Fashion designer and Netherlands native Berber Soepboer aims to make clothes that “can be worn in different ways, so the owner can make choices in how to wear the cloth,” but we think she might have gone too far when she teamed up with a graphic designer to create this color-by-numbers dress. Each spiral-covered dress comes with fabric markers, so you can fill in the blanks and make your outfit match your accessories. If you’re up for combining crafting and clothes, the dress will run you £250 (that’s about $406!) at Michiel Schuurman. [Daily Mail] Keep reading »

Blow On This Dress And Make A Wish

Remember that whole LED dress moment? OK, so here’s an outfit you’ll never find me in, but I have to admit it’s pretty cool. Stijn Ossevoort designed this dress to look like dandelions, but the designer took the creativity one step further: Stijn decided to take the associated motion of blowing seeds and use it in a new way. As you blow against the dress (um, heh), little light bulbs flash where the seeds would be on a real plant. Get it? Just like a real dandelion? It’s kind of precious in the nerdiest way possible.
