London Fashion Scene Invaded By Drag Queens

Girl, the drag queens are coming! On Sunday, Sept. 6, while New York fashion editors will undoubtedly be laying out their neat little wardrobes for the coming Fashion Week, those in London will be slipping into sequin gowns and lamé hammer pants. It’s Bistrotheque’s Annual Drag Ball at Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House! The evening includes such performance categories as “International Diva in a Leading Role,” “London Fashionista at the Opera,” and “Pushy Mother with Kids at a Ballet Audition.” (Priceless.) And with a panel of judges that reads like a who’s who of the Brit style scene—Love magazine’s Katie Grand, designers Henry Holland and Roksanda Ilincic, to name a few—the competition is sure to be fierce. RuPaul’s Drag Race: You Betta Work!

Last night, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” premiered on LOGO and since then I’ve been strutting around my apartment trying to impersonate female impersonators. Those girls have got it going on! When the contestants were all hosed down washing cars for their first photo shoot, not one of those hos lost their makeup. While I get runny mascara if I just break a sweat, the drenched drag stars were still flawless! How do they do it?! (See video above) The contestants are full of surprises, just like the show. Although there is one particular casting that stood out — Santino Rice from “Project Runway” is a judge. Sadly, he’s total d-bag as a panelist. Bummer. I liked him better when he was impersonating the gentleman judge, Tim Gunn. But RuPaul has been lifted up to where she belongs, as the mother hen of how to work it! She advises the glitterati as a man, but then snaps into her persona once they’re all gussied up. Her delivery is as strikingly seductive as her look. Glowing in soft light and blonde curls, Ru looked straight into the camera as she said to the two contestants facing elimination: “Lip sync — for your life!” All hail the Queen! Keep reading »

Project Runway: What A Drag!

Designs We Hated [From Left]: Jerell’s Glittery Green Number; Daniel’s Sorbet Meltdown; Keith’s Filthy Howard the Duck Thing (Like Nina Garcia said, it is quite a puzzle)

On this week’s episode the designers were challenged to create an outfit for drag queens. Although this was a new challenge, not a recycle bin rescue from a previous season, I wasn’t really excited to watch it. I had a hard time figuring out why I should care.The best part of Runway for me is the fashion and this time it wasn’t fashion, but theatrics. And not haute couture theatrics that must convey a fashion aesthetic and drama. I get that the queens each have a character and their costumes must portray that character, but we learned very little about who these gals are. Sure, each of them had a catch phrase and a cool name, but there has to be more. I would have loved to learn how the queens get into drag because as guest judge RuPaul explained, “Drag is all smoke and mirrors.” But all we learned was that they stuff their bras, duh, and they must hide the “candy” (that is exactly what you think it is).
