The Soapbox: In (Reluctant) Defense of Dr. Phil

I never thought I’d write an article under that title but here goes.

Earlier this week, Dr. Phil asked over Twitter: “If a girl is drunk, is it alright to have sex with her?” The Twittersphere overwhelmingly answered “No,” calling Dr. Phil a “moron,” “asshole” and “rape apologist,” among other things. I don’t doubt the possibility that Dr. Phil (or whichever lackey mans his Twitter account) may have posed that question for lecherous or self-serving reasons. Yet as a feminist, this reaction left me honestly dismayed. Were we saying that a drunk girl can never consent to sex? That sex with someone who’s been drinking is always, necessarily, rape? Sure, Dr. Phil’s a total butthead, but I don’t think we want to make the argument that drunk sex necessarily means rape, do we?

And yet this is the exact argument being made by Carmen Rios, a former college sexual assault activist, who was so “shocked and appalled” that Dr. Phil (whose real name is Phil McGraw) had asked such a question that she started a Change.org petition encouraging supporters to call on McGraw to host a show educating his viewers on assault prevention. “Lesson 101 in my courses,” says Rios, “was that sexual contact without verbal, sober, conscious consent is rape.”

But, it’s not — not legally speaking, and not in practice. Keep reading »

"I am confused."
"A young man that fell deeply, romantically in love."

This Thursday and Friday, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man who confessed to “catfishing” Manti Te’o, will appear on “Dr. Phil” to talk about the hoax. Dr. Phil appeared on”The Today Show” this morning to discuss the interview and said that when he asked Tuiasosopo why he posed as Lennay Kekua, he attributed it to romantic feelings for Te’o:

“Here we have a young man that fell deeply, romantically in love … I ask him straight up … was this a romantic relationship with you? And he says, ‘Yes.’ … I said, are you then, therefore, gay?  And he says, ‘Well, when you put it that way, yes … I am confused.”

Get Real!
"You're in your little tie and your little shoes...."

A little later today, Dr. Phil is interviewing former “America’s Next Top Model” contestant turned meth addict Jael Strauss, but I’m almost more excited for his interview next week with Dina Lohan. By the looks of this preview, Lindsay’s mom is straight up sauced for her tete-a-tete with the tough-talking “doctor” — she even taunts him for his “little tie and little shoes.” Dr. Phil don’t play that, so I expect his shouts of “Get real!” are to blame for all those tears. This family is a disaster. It’s no wonder LiLo has been so wrecked.

8 Reality TV Stars With Drug Problems

We were totally shocked when we saw former “America’s Next Top Model” contest Jael Strauss — who’d appeared on Cycle 8 of the series — would be appearing on a “Dr. Phil” episode devoted to her drug abuse. Since appearing on the series six years ago, Jael’s life has taken a severely downward slide. She’s been addicted to meth, and her family begs her to get help during a harrowing Dr. Phil intervention. Jael hardly looks like the beautiful girl she was just six short years ago — with pockmarked skin and bleached blond locks, she appears much older and worn out than most other 28-year-olds.

We wish her the best and hope that Thursday’s episode of “Dr. Phil” gets her the help she needs. Jael is hardly the only reality TV star to slide into addiction — let’s review…

[Dr. Phil's wife got pregnant unexpectedly at a time in his life when he was not ready to have children.] I was doing work in another city with a good friend of mine. He said, ‘The office closes at five – why don’t you come in and we’ll do your vasectomy?” He didn’t have a nurse there, so I actually assisted him by handing him the instruments. It’s painful when they kind of pull on it. He put me in the car with an ice pack, and I drove myself to the airport and flew home.”

Whoa. Just whoa. TMI alert! Dr. Phil gave himself a vasectomy! But don’t worry, ladies. He had it reversed. [Daily Mail UK]

Men Rule, Girls Drool, Blah, Blah, Blah

We’ve heard some dumb things said on Dr. Phil, but his recent guest Dick Masterson takes the cake. Trust us, his name is no misnomer. He’s the chauvinist who runs MenAreBettertThanWomen.com and he goes around spouting gems like, “How is prostitution illegal but alimony isn’t? They’re basically the same thing. You’re paying for the whore to leave.” Honestly, how much would it cost to get rid of him? We’ll start chipping in immediately. [YouTube]
