Anchorman Wears The Same Suit Every Day For A Year To Demonstrate Sexist Viewer Attitudes

Finally, a social experiment I can get behind: Australian morning news anchor Karl Stefanovic decided he was going to test viewers’ differing attitudes toward him and his female coworker, Lisa Wilkinson, after she did a segment on the negative feedback and unsolicited advice she gets about her wardrobe. He wore the same suit for a month and no one noticed, so he told Wilkinson and their producer about his idea, and decided to extend the experiment for a whole year.

The grand total of comments he’s received on his wardrobe is a whopping zero. He says he does get other feedback, though: “I’m judged on my interviews, my appalling sense of humor — on how I do my job, basically. Whereas women are quite often judged on what they’re wearing or how their hair is.” Keep reading »

What Double Standard Drives You Crazy?

pulling hair out

Oh, good ol’ double standards! Reddit asked its users yesterday which double standard they hate most in modern society and commenters, both male and female, had some pretty sobering (and funny) observations to share. Do these ring true in your own life? Keep reading »

8 Reasons More Women Don’t Write About Sex

8 Reasons More Women Don't Write About Sex

Like many daydreamers, I often think about time periods other than the one I’m currently living in that I would most likely enjoy. I usually settle on the roaring ’20s (it’s easy to get caught up in how cute everyone would look with flapper dresses and bobbed hair). Then I remember, of course, what the ’20s were actually like. Women had only recently secured the right to vote, abortion was illegal, penicillin and birth control were very new, and employment opportunities were still divided into men- and women-only. (Guess who had the less attractive options?)

This little game is just a daydream. Yet it ends up always serving as a reminder that I’m fortunate to be a woman the 21st century. And that’s a reminder I’m ashamed to admit, as a feminist, that I need somewhat often. There are times when being a woman even in 2014 feels disappointing — things should be better, things should have changed more. I’m privileged as an educated white, middle-class woman that these things are as few as they are. But one of the very biggest areas that needs changing is women writing about sex. Keep reading »

chinese high school bans colorful bra and panties
  • A Chinese high school has banned girls from wearing “anything but flesh-colored bras and underwear” because colorful delicates are showing through the school’s uniform. Solid-colored bras will evoke one punishment and for patterned bras the punishment will be even higher. Boys, it seems, are still allowed to wear boxer briefs from every color of the rainbow.  Here’s an idea, chuckleheads: maybe get thicker school uniforms?! [Shanghaiist via The Gloss]
  • Following an incident where a Black-skinned pageant winner was de-crowned because her Latina heritage could not be confirmed [fourth item], the Little Miss Hispanic Delaware pageant will require contestants to show papers proving they are Latina. This, of course, is problematic because Latinas can also be Black, white, redheaded, etc. and Latina heritage isn’t always something that is documented. [Feministing] Keep reading »

Guy Talk: Can Male Masturbators Catch A Break?

Male masturbators can’t seem to catch a break. Despite the assumption that every guy has masturbated, is masturbating, or will masturbate, self-pleasure has been getting a bad rap for 3000 years. From Orthodox Judaism to traditional Buddhism, the religious strictures against men masturbating are ancient and enduring. (Because the spiritual authorities were so often ignorant about female masturbation, women caught a rare break. What was the point in condemning a practice many men didn’t believe existed?) Is There A Sex Toy Double Standard?

I have … hold on, let me count … five vibrators. While I don’t flaunt them — i.e., they’re not laying out on my bedside table for guests to ogle — I don’t pretend not to have them. I am an empowered woman! I masturbate! I am the master of my own orgasm! Roar! Or rather, purrrrr

But I gotta admit, if a dude I liked confessed to using a sex toy, like, say, a Fleshlight, to masturbate, I would be weirded out. It’s hypocritical, no doubt, but I’m not alone. Am I part of a sex toy double standard? Keep reading »
