Oh good, another depressing study about women and sex! Bring it on.
College-aged women would prefer not to be friends with promiscuous women (defined as having 20 or more sexual partners by their early 20s), even when they themselves have had numerous sexual partners or claim to have liberal views about sex. This according to a study of 751 college students by Cornell University. Can you say “hypocrisy”? Keep reading »
Holy double standard, Batman!
Our fellow ladyblog Jezebel has an exclusive today about a 16-year-old Catholic school student in Fairfax, Virginia, who sexted a photo to two lacrosse players at the school, who then shared it with the rest of their team. The girl has been kicked out of school. Everyone on the lacrosse team, including the boy(s) who shared the sext, are still enrolled.
You can read the whole story at Jezebel, but the shorter version of the story is that 16-year-old Alexis, who manages the Paul VI Catholic High School lacrosse team, texted a topless picture of herself to her friend, a lacrosse player, on a dare. Together, they laughed about it and group-texted the sext to a second lacrosse player. They all thought they were just joking around, but then one of the boys — it’s not clear exactly who — then shared the sext with the whole lacrosse team. You know, like a tit-pic expediting service. Celebrity gossip is not the place to look for nuance or thoughtfulness. A lot of it is downright sexist. Take, for example, today’s headline on New York Post gossip page’s Page Six column, “Selena Gomez ‘To Blame For Justin Bieber’s Behavior’.”
You’re probably aware that pop stars Gomez and Bieber were, for a time, a couple. They broke up. You’re also probably aware that Bieber has been losing it a little bit lately: arguing with his neighbors, showing up late/canceling concerts, trying to fight paparazzi, running around in gas masks, abandoning his pet monkey.
Apparently, all of that is his ex-girlfriend’s fault! Keep reading »
Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber‘s “All I Want For Christmas” duet debuted last night during the Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center. The best I can say about it is “feel good Christmas music” with a questionably appropriate music video.
Now, Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey. High notes and shaking her spray-tanned booty is what she’s about. It is the way of the world. I think her short-short-short Santa outfit in her “All I Want For Christmas” music video with Justin Bieber pushes the line of good taste. But hey, this is a grown woman obsessed with rainbows, stuffed animals and butterflies that we’re talking about.
No, my discomfort with the “All I Want For Christmas” music video is the flirtation between Mariah and Justin Bieber. Keep reading »
“Women are held to a different standard in all areas. Let’s work harder, produce more and better and get over it. I’m through whining about a liberal press that holds conservative women to a different standard because it doesn’t do any good to whine about it.”
— Sarah Palin, as much as I hate to admit it, had a point on Fox News the other night when she spoke about double standards women face (in response to Michele Bachmann noodling a presidential run and comedian Bill Maher calling Palin a “t**t.”) Nothing is worse than so-called “liberals” who think it’s acceptable to make sexist comments about conservative female politicians. (Sarah’s complaint about the “liberal media” is a bunch of bunk, though.) [USA Today] Keep reading »
“When I am assertive, I’m a bitch. When a man is assertive, he’s a boss. He [is] bossed up. No negative connotation behind ‘bossed up.’ But lots of negative connotation behind being a bitch. Donald Trump can say, ‘You’re fired.’ Let Martha Stewart run her company the same way and be the same way. [People will say] ‘f**king old evil bitch!’ But Donald Trump, he gets to hang out with young bitches and have 50 different wives and just be cool. ‘Oh, Donald, we love you, Donald Trump!’ … When you’re a girl, you have to be everything. You have to be dope at what you do but you have to be super sweet and you have to be sexy and you have to be this, you have to be that, and you have to be nice. It’s like, ‘I can’t be all those things at once. I’m a human being.’”

Sometimes being a feminist means sticking up for someone you hate when she is being treated wrong. That feminist is me and the person I hate is Angelina from “Jersey Shore.” Angelina is the embodiment of every awful characteristic in a human being: duplicitous, slimy, back-stabbing. None of her “Jersey Shore” cast members like or trust Angelina and call her the “Staten Island dump” to her face. Really, the girl’s lack of self-awareness would be amusing if it weren’t so sad.
One person does like Angelina, though: Jose, a gent from Miami who buys her a Fossil watch after two dates. Angelina takes the watch from Jose, but then “smushes” with Vinny during a drunken night of bad decisions. The cast will have none of this. They call Angelina a “whore” and a “slut.” The Situation goes up to Jose at the club one night to say Angelina has something she needs to tell him. Keep reading »
Here’s a statistic that shouldn’t sit right with anyone: Over 73 percent of people in a study by the Havens, a sexual assault referral center in the U.K., believe the victim should “take responsibility” for getting raped if they’ve already performed another sexual act on the rapist. Raped? Well, you’d already given him a hand job so, really, you should have expected that to happen! Keep reading »
It’s 2009, bitches, and women are kicking ass and taking names. We’re outpacing men in colleges, running our own companies, and buying our own homes. But there’s one area in which we girls are sorely lacking: sex scandals. Yes, sex scandals. Poor LeAnn Rimes is one of the only high-profile ladies who has been caught cheating and she’s up against infidelity heavyweights like David Letterman, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, and, of course, Tiger Woods. Keep reading »
