The Lifetime Original “House Of Versace” Preview Is Here, And It’s Amazing

Gina Gershon is Donatella Versace in "House of Versace"
Did I Stutter?

Lovers of fashion, lovers of drama, lovers of crazy, lovers of Gina Gershon, lovers of Lifetime original movies: LOOK ALIVE, because “House of Versace,” premiering October 5, has all y’all covered — and in neon animal print and diamond studs, to boot. Donatella Versace as she exists in the material world is a real-life character, so it takes an unbelievably convincing actress to pull off the role without making a caricature of it, and from the looks of this just-released extended preview, Gershon is just the lady to do it. Ahhhhhhh-mazing. Best thing I’ve seen all day. (I mean, besides this.) [via Fashionista]

Is Lady Gaga Channeling Donatella Versace?

Donatella Versace is known as much for her perma-tan and white blond hair as for her fashions (which I generally think are tickety-tackety, but c’est la vie). It seems Donatella’s look, dahling, has perhaps inspired one of the biggest artists in the world, because this is apparently Lady Gaga’s new schtick. Here she is at Thursday night’s Gagosian Gallery opening for fashion photographers Inez and Vinoodh, decked out in the signature look for her new album, Artpop. What do you guys think? [Photo: Fame/Flynet]

“I’m not like this genetically.”

— Shock! Awe! Donatella Versace admits at the Vogue festival that, unlike her pal Lady Gaga, she was not just born this way. True, she said as much in the context of using “tons of cream” and taking care of her skin and hair, but we can go ahead and read between the lines, right? But who even cares what her face looks like — despite her intimidating persona, Donatella is actually pretty rad, telling her star-struck audience at the event, “Right now, having you kids in front of me asking these questions, this is my proudest moment.” [Vogue UK]

“Feminism is dead in the world. It comes from another time. I’m a feminist. I want to fight, but I don’t see many people with this desire to fight for something. Women don’t help each other, especially in fashion. I know Miuccia [Prada] … but that’s it. Nobody else.”

– Oh look. Commentary from noted gender studies scholar Donatella Versace, who allegedly said she did not want her line for H&M photographed on “real women” for a New York Daily News promotional feature instead of professional — and likely thinner — models. That may be a more business-savvy viewpoint to take, but not such a feminist one.  (And make an effort to look a little bit less like Victoria Gotti, because I seriously cannot tell them apart.) [Telegraph UK]

A Glamorous Glimpse At Donatella’s Average Day

Harper’s Bazaar is really bringing it with this “…In 24 Hours” feature (last month’s issue covered the Kaiser) and I’m loving it. I mean, where else are you going to get a first-person, day-long diary straight from the pens of fashion’s biggest bold-faced names? I think one of the primary reasons they thrill me is that they tend to recall the intro scene of “American Psycho,” which I find so delightful.

The segment followed Tom Ford, then Karl Lagerfeld, and I reveled in knowing the daily routines (and, I’m not going to lie, the products) of these design icons. I was beside myself this morning to find Donatella Versace as the column’s next subject. Keep reading »

H&M Responds To Donatella Versace’s “Real Women”-Can’t-Model-Our-Clothes Controversy

H&M has responded to a claim by The New York Daily News that Donatella Versace would not approve photographing the new Versace for H&M line worn “real women.” Initially, H&M expressed an interest in casting “real women,” rather than professional models, in a promotional feature for the Daily News. The Model New Yorkers photos were intended to involve recent college graduates wearing pieces from the collection. Perplexingly, the idea was quickly shot down by H&M. Apparently, a publicist for the retailer contacted the Daily News to explain that the photo feature would probably not go forward as Versace had to approve the concept — and “Donatella will likely not approve shooting the collection on real women.” Ouch. Yes, Versace Is Doing A Line For H&M

Donatella Versace–the most tanned woman in fashion and pretty much anything else–has announced she’s doing a collaborative diffusion line with H&M, despite announcing in 2008 that she’d nevah, evah work with the Swedish company. “I respect everyone who does it,” she said way back then. “But the reason I didn’t do it is because I work very hard to put the Versace line in the luxury section. I think to put the Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand.” But my, how things have changed. There’ll be around 40 pieces for women and 20 for men. And judging from the look on the left, we’ll be buying — will you? Watch Donatella talk about the new line after the jump! [Global Grind]

The Versace Family—Italian Mobsters?

donatella versace photo

The Versace family—a veritable Italian fashion dynasty—has seen its fair share of scandal and drama (deaths, unfortunate bouts of plastic surgery—we’re looking at you, Donatella). So the rumor that the Versaces are involved in the “’Ndrangheta,” which WWD describes as “the equivalent of the Sicilian Mafia,” actually seems believable. Apparently, an interview with a former member of the Mafia-like org has surfaced, and states that the family has some sort of tie to the ‘Ndrangheta (yeah, we have no idea how to pronounce that), and even that Gianni Versace’s 1997 murder was somehow linked to financial debts the designer owed the mob. Of course, the Versace family and company denies all the accusations. So, who knows if it’s really true? At the very least, someone should write a juicy thriller based on this premise! Fashion Faces Now And Then

It’s hard to see someone like Anna Wintour and believe that she was anything less than robo-fabulous. The thought of Alexander Wang clashing stripes with solids and florals, too, is a tad difficult to imagine. Luckily, now you don’t have to. The Huffington Post has very sweetly distracted us from real work with their roundup of fashion celeb now-and-then-images. Some, like Donatella Versace looking terrifying in a totally different way, are shockers. Oh, and French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld was just as super hot back in the day.
