H&M has responded to a claim by The New York Daily News that Donatella Versace would not approve photographing the new Versace for H&M line worn “real women.” Initially, H&M expressed an interest in casting “real women,” rather than professional models, in a promotional feature for the Daily News. The Model New Yorkers photos were intended to involve recent college graduates wearing pieces from the collection. Perplexingly, the idea was quickly shot down by H&M. Apparently, a publicist for the retailer contacted the Daily News to explain that the photo feature would probably not go forward as Versace had to approve the concept — and “Donatella will likely not approve shooting the collection on real women.” Ouch. Yes, Versace Is Doing A Line For H&M

Donatella Versace–the most tanned woman in fashion and pretty much anything else–has announced she’s doing a collaborative diffusion line with H&M, despite announcing in 2008 that she’d nevah, evah work with the Swedish company. “I respect everyone who does it,” she said way back then. “But the reason I didn’t do it is because I work very hard to put the Versace line in the luxury section. I think to put the Versace line in H&M would confuse the brand.” But my, how things have changed. There’ll be around 40 pieces for women and 20 for men. And judging from the look on the left, we’ll be buying — will you? Watch Donatella talk about the new line after the jump! [Global Grind]

The Versace Family—Italian Mobsters?

donatella versace photo

The Versace family—a veritable Italian fashion dynasty—has seen its fair share of scandal and drama (deaths, unfortunate bouts of plastic surgery—we’re looking at you, Donatella). So the rumor that the Versaces are involved in the “’Ndrangheta,” which WWD describes as “the equivalent of the Sicilian Mafia,” actually seems believable. Apparently, an interview with a former member of the Mafia-like org has surfaced, and states that the family has some sort of tie to the ‘Ndrangheta (yeah, we have no idea how to pronounce that), and even that Gianni Versace’s 1997 murder was somehow linked to financial debts the designer owed the mob. Of course, the Versace family and company denies all the accusations. So, who knows if it’s really true? At the very least, someone should write a juicy thriller based on this premise! Fashion Faces Now And Then

It’s hard to see someone like Anna Wintour and believe that she was anything less than robo-fabulous. The thought of Alexander Wang clashing stripes with solids and florals, too, is a tad difficult to imagine. Luckily, now you don’t have to. The Huffington Post has very sweetly distracted us from real work with their roundup of fashion celeb now-and-then-images. Some, like Donatella Versace looking terrifying in a totally different way, are shockers. Oh, and French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld was just as super hot back in the day. Quotable: Donatella Versace Thinks Natural Is For Vegetables

“I don’t even know what my natural color is. Natural? What is natural? What is that? I do not believe in totally natural for women. For me, natural has something to do with vegetables.”

A More Fashionable Mt. Rushmore

If you’re in Paris, um, now (Hi Leo!), you’ll need to make a stop at Colette simply to check out their windows. Everyone knows Mt. Rushmore, featuring former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. But Item Idem, aka Cyril Duval, a French fashion artist, decided to infuse a bit of style into the monstrous construction. He created an LED display called Mt. Blushmore, replacing the heads of state with notable fashion figures Anna Wintour, Karl Lagerfeld, Donatella Versace, and John Galliano. And now, Colette decided to honor the artist with his own window exhibit, meaning the busts of fashion greats are on display and available for all to see. It’s fashion meets politics in the most perfectly cheeky way. [Sassybella] Keep reading »

Donatella Versace Brings Back Her Fave Old-School Label

Donatella Versace is going back to her roots (and it has nothing to do with her bleached hair). The blond fashionista and chief designer at Versace has announced plans to bring back Versus, the first collection she designed on her own for her family’s label. Versus first debuted in 1989 as the younger, chicer, and less pricey sister line to Versace, but then shut down 16 years later in 2005. After the four-year hiatus, Donatella asked “it” Brit designer Christopher Kane to create a small accessories collection for the line back in February. The blingy, studded and rock ‘n’ roll chic pieces he designed may be indicative of what we can expect for Versus’ Spring 2010 debut. “The collection reflects Versus’ DNA,” Versace told Women’s Wear Daily, “And is aimed at young people who want to dress with their own style but like to evolve and break new ground.” [Fashionologie] Keep reading »

Where the Girls Aren’t: Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Doesn’t Include Many Women

Vanity Fair has posted the latest version of its annual New Establishment list. But, hey! Where are all the women? Out of the 100 moguls, entertainers, and businessfolk who made the list as the top 100 “leaders of the information age,” just how many are women? A whopping nine. Who are they, you ask? Oprah Winfrey, Angelina Jolie, Arianna Huffington, Miuccia Prada, Diane Sawyer, Anna Wintour, Annette de la Renta, Donatella Versace, and Diane Von Furstenberg. So, what have we learned? If you’re a woman who wants to be considered a player in the New Media era by the media, you better be an entertainer, work in fashion, or have really, really great hair. Keep reading »
