Donald Glover is leaving “Community” five episodes into the current season, but no one, including Glover, has given any explanation as to why. The once super active Twitter user has been pretty quiet on social media lately and some suspected he was choosing to focus on his rap career (as Childish Gambino). But in the Instagram snap above, Glover seems to be saying that he left the show because he’s had a rough year and needs some time to figure shit out on his own? Some have taken this note as a sign of trouble, and the part about seeing friends die is certainly upsetting, but I think Donald could just be trying to convey his disenchantment with Hollywood. Regardless, sounds like he needs a break. In the meantime, he’s being smart about his finances, going for the moderately priced hotel over, say, the Four Seasons. I hope they upgrade his room as a thank you for the subtle shout out. [Uproxx
UPDATE: So I didn’t realize that this was actually just one of a series of notes, written on Marriot stationery, that he posted to Instagram. Together, they certainly take on a more heartbreakingly honest and vulnerable tone. See them in order after the jump! Keep reading »
“Hannah acts like she has a political issue with [Sandy, the black Republican she is sleeping with], but what she actually has an issue with is him disliking what she does. Because she feels like she should receive universal praise, and the fact that someone’s sleeping with her should also mean that they respect her prose style. … I’ve had one boyfriend who I knew had an active … not dislike, but some issues with what I did. It wasn’t even like he was like, ‘I think you’re pushing a weird agenda.’ He just didn’t think I was that great a writer. It was right when ‘Tiny Furniture’ was coming out, and I didn’t love it. It’s important to me to receive constructive criticism and I don’t want to be with a yes man, but I want to be with somebody who at the very baseline level thinks that I’m talented and takes what I do seriously. I couldn’t be attracted to someone if they made work that I found absurd.”
–Lena Dunham explains to New York magazine’s Vulture blog why she cast Donald Glover on “Girls” as a dude Hannah dates briefly before they get into a fight about their differences. It turns out she once had her own Sandy, but he didn’t like her movie “Tiny Furniture,” not her essay. I guess we can assume this means Dunham’s real life BF Jack Antonoff is on board with her work? Donald Glover is not to be confused with Danny Glover. Danny Glover = the guy from the “Lethal Weapon” movies. Donald, though, plays geeky Troy on the criminally underrated “Community.” And of late, he’s got a new role — as Lena Dunham’s Republican boyfriend Sandy on “Girls.” Donald’s juggling a lot of bananas — he’s also a rapper, who performs under the name Childish Gambino. But aside from his obvious multi-tasking skills, here’s why we really love Donald: He manages to be both hilariously funny and adorably sexy at the same time. And that, my friends, is the perfect storm. The perfect storm of awesome. Click through the gallery above to check out a bunch more photos of Donald looking fiiiiine.
We were simultaneously madly jealous/intrigued when paparazzi snaps showed Lena Dunham filming scenes of “Girls” with Donald Glover. Season two isn’t back until next week but a lil’ spoiler (after the jump!) at The Hollywood Reporter has some deets on what he’s doing with Hot-Mess Hannah Horvath. Keep reading »
I’ve always been a fan of the show “Community,” starring dreamy Joel Mchale and a cast of other talented comedians. But after watching their series of season four bloopers, I definitely want to hang out with them. Their set looks like so much fun! (Though it might actually not be, given the feud between “Community” creator Dan Harmon and Chevy Chase. Harmon was fired as a result.) So I’m hereby publicly offering myself as an additional member of the gang. I can’t rap like Alison Brie, but I’m hoping they can find a spot for me on their team. [YouTube]
Call it an enigma wrapped in a mystery stuffed in a donut. “Community”‘s Donald Glover has signed up to play Young Tracy Jordan on an upcoming episode of “30 Rock.” Actually, it’s going to be during “30 Rock”‘s second-ever live episode, so that should be pretty exciting. Apparently, this isn’t Glover’s first go-around as Tracy. He also recorded “Tracy’s” voice on the full-length version of “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah.” Said producer Robert Carlock, “Tracy wasn’t available, so Donald came in and [performed the extra material],” he explains. “I don’t think you can tell. It’s pretty remarkable. All the spoken stuff is Donald doing Tracy.” The live episode will air April 26. [TV Line]
After several weeks and nearly 20,000 votes, we’ve narrowed down our Sweet 16 Most Stylish Men to a slim and sartorially excellent Great 8. Take a good look at the matches we have coming up and pick your battles well. David Beckham vs. Adam Levine? Jon Hamm vs. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (sweet Lord, don’t make me choose!). The tightest races? Donald Glover only narrowly won over James Franco and the “Gossip Girl” guys — Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick — were in a battle royale. It’s on you, dear Frisky readers, to determine who’s going to go all the way to number one, so vote early and often for the men whose style makes you wild. Keep reading »
“The first day I met [Tracy Morgan], I had a small Afro, and he was like, ‘You know, if you want to get dreads, you should get your girl pregnant and put the placenta in your hair.’ And I was like, ‘What the f**k are you talking about?’ But from that point on, I thought, ‘Any brain that can make that up needs to be studied.’”
