“I think everyone should be with who they love. I don’t want to be controversial or stir up a bunch of trouble but people are going to love who they are going to love. I think gay couples should be allowed to marry. They should suffer just like us heterosexuals. Ha ha ha!”
Oh Dolly Parton, how much do I love thee? So so much. The country superstar told the UK’s Event magazine that while she didn’t know any gay people growing up as a member of a large Pentecostal family in rural Tennessee, she does know of gay family members who will never come out. A shame, as Dolly totally supports gay marriage and would be an amazing gay wedding entertainment, no? [Daily Mail UK] [Photo: Getty Images]
“If I didn’t know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her. But I’ve watched her grow up. So I don’t. She knows what she’s doing. She was very proud of the work she did as Hannah Montana, but people were gonna leave her there forever. And she was just smotherin’ and chokin’ in it. So she felt she had to do something completely drastic. And she did. She made her point, she made her mark, and more power to her… I’m hoping that now she can relax and show people how talented she really is. ’Cause the girl can write. The girl can sing. The girl is smart. And she doesn’t have to be so drastic. But I will respect her choices. I did it my way, so why can’t she do it her way?”
Dolly Parton, who just happens to be Miley Cyrus‘ godmother (so jealous), gave her take on the pop star’s transformation from tween Disney idol to, well, the Miley we all know and love/hate today for Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People issue. After reading this, I feel like I have a better understanding of Miley and more respect for her as an artist/performer. If anyone else had written it, I’d be like, “Yeah, whatever,” but when Dolly speaks, I reverently light my Dolly Parton prayer candle and honor whatever she says as gospel. [Time via Us Weekly]
Four of the things in life I love the most: Dolly Parton, Casey Wilson (RIP “Happy Endings”!), country music, and drunk people trying to explain things. Obviously the Nashville episode of “Drunk History,” which delves into Dolly’s tempestuous relationship with Porter Wagoner, is delighting me to no end. Check out this hilarious clip above and watch the whole episode here. [Comedy Central via Jezebel]
Incase you forgot, Miley Cyrus is a singer. A singer with country roots, y’all. Her daddy is Billy Ray Cyrus, ya know? And her godmother is Dolly Parton herself, so I’m sure she had special permission to sing Dolly’s hit song “Jolene” for her “Garden Sessions,” a collection of videos of Miley singing classic covers with her band record in her backyard this summer. Miley doesn’t have that beautiful, clear-as-a-bell clarity that Dolly has, but I think she does a pretty good job. What can I say? I am kind of a fan of Miley.
I’m curious to see whether this country simplicity will be the vibe on her upcoming album, which she’s recording with producer Pharrell Williams. ”Her sound right now is her personality,” Williams told MTV. “That’s what we’ve been aiming for in the studio and that’s what’s been coming out and that’s what’s been sounding so interesting. Her voice is a very powerful one — you just have to hear it to know that and to understand it. It’s nowhere near what it is that you think.” Check out another song from “The Garden Sessions” after the jump…
