Two Men And A Baby … Kind Of

There are alternative ways of becoming a parent if traditional human child rearing is not your cup of tea. Partners of 26 years, Mark Kirby and A.J. Sapolnick, adopted their “son,” Digby, some 20 years ago in Paris. Yes, Digby is technically a “doll” but they don’t care to refer to him that way. To them, he is their child. Keep reading »

The Black Baby Doll Project Puts Dollies In Hands Of Little Girls

One of the privileges I had as a little white girl was always having had toys that look like me. In fact, American Girl‘s brown-haired, brown-eyed Samantha Parkington doll looked almost exactly like me. Like little girls all around the world, I used to hold her, brush her hair, pretend she was my daughter and enjoy how beautiful she looked. That’s why I think The Black Baby Doll Project, which is in its 13th year, is so important. Sponsored by the Ida B. Wells Living Learning Community, a gateway program for first-year African-American students at Mary Baldwin College in Virginia, BBDP collects black baby dolls each year to gift to little girls so they have a toy who looks like them … Keep reading »

So Wrong: Baby Wee Wee, A Doll That Pees

I’ve never been able to get behind dolls that perform bodily functions, but I especially cannot understand why you would want one that does so animatronically. After the jump, check out an ad for a boy baby doll that will pee in your dad’s face — but only after you feed him and make him laugh until his robotic penis stands at attention. (Note: it’s semi-NSFW.) Keep reading »

The Barbie-fication Of “Mad Men”

For those of us who have dreamed of sleeping with Donald Draper, we may soon have our chance — courtesy of Mattel, that is. Mattel will be making 7,000 to 10,000 copies of each doll to be sold in specialty stores and on AMCtv.com and BarbieCollector.com in July, when the show begins its fourth season on AMC. A Doll Whose, Uh, Privates You Can Shave

This doll is all sorts of wrong. Because hair removal is such a big topic on the minds of little kids, you can shave this dolly’s armpits and pubes. Also, apparently the doll has issues with calf hair? Weird. [BuzzFeed] Keep reading »

Jason Wu, arguably the most adorable new-ish American designer in the business these days, has just upped his awesome factor by designing limited-edition dolls for Madame Alexander. We’ve dug around for some images and are officially entranced by the creepy coolness of the mini models in their realistic frocks and gorgeous shoes. (Glance away from the amazing blue ‘fro and covetable dress for a minute and you’ll notice the doll at left is wearing mini Louboutins.) More images after the jump. [Refinery29] Keep reading »

Don Draper Is A Doll

Do you want Don Draper? Don’t we all? A New Zealand ad agency tasked with promoting “Mad Men” — apparently, the show’s not a hit there — created this very special Don Draper doll out of a Ken doll. “See him drink, pitch, & philander,” the box promises. It’s so cute when it’s tiny. [Vulture] Keep reading »

If you’re into collectibles, listen up. Gwen Stefani has five brand-new Harajuku lovers for your collection, and they’re beyond adorable. To spice up the winter line, Snow Bunnies, she’s created the Sunshine Cuties. “We wanted to change up the outfits, because that’s what they are — little fashion plates,” said Gwen. Each of the five personalities — Love, L’il Angel, Music, Baby, and G — are based on summer scents, complete with floral accents in their hair and precious little bikinis. Singer-turned-designer Ms. Stefani described her own little doll’s outfit as such: “It’s the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ version of a bathing suit,” and admitted that she developed the line on tour, proving that multitasking is a skill she’s mastered. She’s even looking into designing more jewelry come spring, as well as a stationary line. “Eventually, I’d love to do everything,” she said. “But I want to do it right — I want to be totally involved with it all.” Keep reading »
