“Doctor Who,” “Listen” And Coping With Trauma

I get behind on “Doctor Who” — being cable-less will do that to you — but this week’s episode was being widely touted as one of the best in years, so of course I had to make it a priority to watch. When “Doctor Who” is good, it’s really, really good; it is at heart a celebration of humanity, and as much as The Doctor’s companions can be cast as his accessories, he’s often also their foil, the vehicle by which they have the opportunity to express their humanness.

I’m not too cool to admit that I’ve taken life lessons from “Doctor Who” — I abide by John Green’s definition of “nerdiness” as “unironic enthusiasm about the miracle of human consciousness.” (I’m also not so pretentious that I consider my opinion on it invalid despite the fact that, no, I haven’t watched the original series, so there.) I named my blog for a quote from “The Power of Three.” I have “Allons-y!” tattooed on my leg. I think one of the show’s strengths is its zeal for adventure and discovery, not just in terms of travel to distant places, but in terms of introspection and self-discovery: see “The God Complex,” or really any regeneration. The show’s protagonist has to find out over and over who he really is. Keep reading »

And The 12th Doctor Who Is...

The new doctor is in.

Whovians around the world are basking in the announcement just made by the BBC: the Twelfth Doctor on the beloved sci-fi program “Doctor Who” will be played by Peter Capaldi.

“Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege,” Capaldi said of his new role. “Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can’t wait to get started.” Read more on Celebuzz…

Helen Mirren Has Some Very Specific Suggestions For Who Should Play The 12th “Doctor Who”

pink hair and how to get it

We’ve heard from Dame Helen Mirren on the topic of “Doctor Who,” in particular, the casting of the new Doctor, a few times now. But she’s not done yet (or at least people aren’t done asking her about it yet) and we’re totally fine with that. Hear who she suggested to take up the mantle.

Mirren was asked by ITV’s “Daybreak” whether or not she’d take on the role of the 12th Doctor on the long-running BBC sci-fi series. She answered, “absolutely not.” And although we’ve heard that from her before, she made sure to drive the point home.

“I’m not going to be the first female Doctor Who – no, no, no,” she said. “I absolutely wouldn’t contemplate that.”

Although she does think there’s a right person for the job. Read more on The Mary Sue…

Geeks need love, too, and one of them apparently needs the quirkiest engagement ring box in existence: it’s shaped like TARDIS, the time-traveling police call box from “Dr. Who.” So did she say yes? Or is she holding out for David Tennant or Matt Smith? [The Mary Sue]
