Last week, burlesque star Dita Von Teese had me scratching my head at something she said in an interview with Into The Gloss. Dita, who is publishing an offbeat beauty guide soon, was giving tips on how to “sexify” getting ready so it turns on your man. She explained:
“In my book, I’ll have all kinds of things in it that you just don’t do around guys — like how I do my hair if a guy’s watching, how to make the process glamorous, so it doesn’t look crazy. I won’t go around with the hot rollers and all the clips in front of a guy that I’m dating, so, I know how to curl my hair with a curling iron, and use duckbill clips so it looks nice when I’m doing it. … But there are certain things to be discreet about during the seduction process. Men like to watch you get ready, but I kind of tailor things a little bit for when they’re watching.”
I wasn’t entirely sure I could take Dita Von Teese’s word for it. I’ve had boyfriends who have not been able to take their hands off me while I’m trying to get dressed in the morning or putting on makeup and I’ve also had boyfriends who could not have cared less. Some guys might be turned on by the voyeuristic element but I imagine most of them are just terrified at how scary eyelash curlers look. Anyway, I’m sure Dita has a full-on boudoir and anything she does is instantly sexed up by mood lighting and the smell of Agent Provocateur Petale Noir. She’s not exactly the status quo of beauty grooming here.
But I love Dita and I thought she might have a point. So I did what Frisky girls do in this scenario and turned to guys on my IM for the scoop: Keep reading »
“Confidence is the important thing with beauty, mostly. It’s really about doing what you believe is beautiful. I feel most beautiful when I have my red lips on and when I have my cat eyeliner on and my hair curled—that’s what I feel good in, even though lots of people will see me with straight hair and no makeup on, and they’ll say I look so much younger. I don’t really care, though. I don’t care if they think I look prettier without the makeup and hair — it’s about what makes you feel good about yourself. I like having makeup on; I like the discipline it requires. For example, I can’t just dive into a cheeseburger; I’ll have some nice grilled chicken … or a salad. Although salad is hard to eat with lipstick on, too. (Laughs) But there’s a discipline involved … you can’t touch your face with your hands as often, which is good, because you won’t get sick as often. It’s like wearing high heels: there’s a ladylike discipline involved with wearing high heels or a corset … or pencil skirts. Suddenly you have to change the way you are in the world, and I think makeup and hair are a little like that.”
– Dita Von Teese gave an epic interview to beauty blog Into The Gloss and I love this quote. Beauty (and fashion!) should be about what you think looks good on yourself and what makes you feel beautiful. Is that being a tomboy? Is that being uber-feminine like Dita? You should not let the multi-million dollar beauty and fashion industries dictate how you should present yourself anymore than you should let religious folks, feminists, or Internet commenters dictate that. Whatever you want to do for you is your choice.
After the jump, Dita gets serious and talks … dun-dun-duhnnnnnnnn … nipple hair: Keep reading »
Is there ever a time when Dita Von Teese doesn’t look glamorous? If so, I haven’t seen it yet. Here she is going to Pilates. Pilates! I bet most of the girls in her class show up in greasy ponytails and Juicy velour track suits. They must hate her. [Photo: Fame/Flynet]
Burlesque performer and Marilyn Manson-escapee Dita Von Teese was spotted shopping around Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon, in this girly, soft getup. While Dita typically dresses with vintage flare, we think this look can be slightly updated to give it a more contemporary feel. After the jump, our picks to get Dita’s retro flare. Keep reading »
Beyonce wears one onstage. So does Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, and Madonna. Ebay has sold 1,900 of them in the past three months. Vintage boutiques are marking up their prices like mad. What are they? Corsets, of course! The Spanx of the Victorian era is back in a big way, and their recent popularity has the fashion industry and historians searching for answers. Why is everyone suddenly clamoring for a corset of their very own? After all, they’re not exactly comfortable or practical. The BBC’s Vanessa Barford tackled this question in a fascinating article about the history of the corset, and it turns out that there are quite a few factors contributing to the current trend… Keep reading »
Another day, another celebrity makeup line! I kid — this is one that’s worth getting excited about. Unfortunately, not too excited, because while Dita Von Teese is creating a makeup collection, the future of its distribution stateside is dubious. The burlesque icon’s line in association with Artdeco, aptly titled Dita Von Teese Classics, will be released mid-June in Germany, where the brand is based, but sources say it could find its way over here sooner rather than later. Dita’s range consists of rosy blushes, neutral eyeshadows, stunning false lashes, nail lacquers, and six velvety lipsticks in shades of rich pink, orange, and (naturally) red, all designed by Dita with a completely DIY approach in mind. I love Dita’s old-school, glamorous aesthetic, but I love and respect even more the way that she expresses herself and her use of cosmetics, and how she insists that with just a little bit of time and effort, “anyone can learn to be glamorous.” [Beautylish] Keep reading »
Dita von Teeese is usually the picture of refined sexiness, but something obviously went very, very wrong at the 2012 Duftstar Awards. Von Teese looks as though she’s some kind of extra in a brothel scene in the “The Borgias” or something here. That, or her dress is actually falling apart.
I would never speak ill of Dita Von Teese. Ever. However, I cannot endorse the dress that the burlesque performer wore in Australia when she launched her Von Follies lingerie line at Target. (It’s only Down Under. Booooo.) It looks like Dita’s lacy bra is trying to escape out of her J.Lo-cut dress on purpose! If your name is anything other than “Dita Von Teese,” how can you possibly wear a dress like this without constantly being stopped by well-meaning folks telling you they can see your bro? I’m more pro-Wearing Lingerie As Outerwear than some other ladies on The Frisky staff, but the escaping bra is a confusing look.
But other than that … rock on, Dita.
