It’s no secret we’ve got a major crush on burlesque performer Dita Von Teese. What’s not to love? She’s got a bitchin’ wardrobe (and an assistant who takes care of her clothes!), an incredible job, and more confidence than we’ve seen in, well … anyone!

Dita was kind enough to talk to us recently about her latest book, Dita: Stripteese, where to get the best vintage, how many pairs of Louboutins she owns, and how often she checks her lipstick … Keep reading »

Dita Von Teese Was Supposed To Be Dita Von Treese

Heather Renee Sweet is Dita Von Teese’s birth name, but how did she come up with her moniker that’s perfect for burlesque? Well, back when she was just a mere 19-year-old stripper, she started going by the name Dita, which she adopted after watching a silent film. When Dita posed for Playboy in the mid-’90s she had to give them a last name to print. She and her friends searched the phone book under Von and found Von Treese. But the magazine printed Von Teese by accident (maybe not?), and the rest is history. [Socialite Life] Keep reading »

Quotable: Dita Says Beauty Does A Brain Good

“The most important thing to remember is that there can be no real definition of beauty … that old saying that beauty is ‘in the eye of the beholder’ is the truth. Being true to yourself and using what you’ve got it the best way, I’m really just a girl who is enhancing what she’s got, and that’s it!”

Get Some Shut-Eye With Dita

Ever fashionable and classy-styled Dita von Teese is bringing her aesthetic to the bedroom, thanks to Moschino. The retro queen, known for her red lips and soft Hollywood curls, put her design mind to work to create a limited-edition sleep mask for the brand. Quotable: Dita Von Teese Has A Way More Exciting Job Than You

“I hired trip ropers for roping lessons for my cowgirl show. I hired a bull rider to teach me how to ride my mechanical-bull lipstick. And yeah, I smoked opium the traditional way to ‘get a feel’ for my Opium Den show. Research!”

Quotable: Dita Von Teese Is Not Your Typical Sex Symbol

“When I first started doing what I do, a lot of my fans were men. It is interesting the way it has shifted and the majority of my fans are women now. Probably 80 percent, but I can see why. I started thinking about that more over past several years why that is and I think a lot of women like to see another kind of sex symbol that doesn’t fit into the blonde, tanned, California beach babe beauty.”

Quotable: Dita Von Teese Doesn’t Understand Why “Stripper” Has A Negative Connotation

“I don’t mind being called [a stripper] because that is what I do, but I don’t understand why there is such a taboo attached to it. Basically what I do is like an actress that has nude scenes in a movie, it’s part of the role and its part of what my show is. It’s not really any different. I think it’s just too easy for people to criticize.”

Quotable: Dita Von Teese Plays “Dress Up”

“Women like to see another kind of sex symbol that doesn’t fit into the blonde, tanned, California beach babe beauty. I can never fit into that role, so I think there are other women like me that say ‘no, me neither’…You can put on red lipstick and put on black gloves and you can curl your hair and play dress-up. Then if you’re tired of it you can just get rid of it. It is not like you have to go to a tanning salon and do all these things to make yourself a certain way, it’s something you can try on and leave.”

Quotable: Dita Von Teese On Why She Appeals To Women

“They are attracted by the message I bring, I’m not about supermodel beauty, but more about natural beauty. The girls with black hair and pale skin, who don’t look fantastic in a bikini, can see in me someone that supports them in their quest for a more alternative sensuality … You can play dressing up with elegance or make a striptease for your significant other. The essence of burlesque is about dressing up properly, enjoying glamour, and taking more time for yourself.”
