Dita von Teeese is usually the picture of refined sexiness, but something obviously went very, very wrong at the 2012 Duftstar Awards. Von Teese looks as though she’s some kind of extra in a brothel scene in the “The Borgias” or something here. That, or her dress is actually falling apart.

What’s Going On With This Dress, Dita Von Teese?

I would never speak ill of Dita Von Teese. Ever. However, I cannot endorse the dress that the burlesque performer wore in Australia when she launched her Von Follies lingerie line at Target. (It’s only Down Under. Booooo.) It looks like Dita’s lacy bra is trying to escape out of her J.Lo-cut dress on purpose! If your name is anything other than “Dita Von Teese,” how can you possibly wear a dress like this without constantly being stopped by well-meaning folks telling you they can see your bro? I’m more pro-Wearing Lingerie As Outerwear than some other ladies on The Frisky staff, but the escaping bra is a confusing look.

But other than that … rock on, Dita.

Dita Von Teese Designing A Lingerie Collection For Target

A lot of celebrity collaborations are ridiculous to the point of insulting (the one by Twilight‘s Kellan Lutz springs to mind) but, if we were to imagine a celebrity-designed collection that actually made sense, Dita von Teese doing lingerie wouldn’t be far off. The burlesque superstar designed a 26 piece capsule collection for Target Australia, to hit stores early February (pre-Valentine’s Day).

The collection, Von Follies by Dita von Teese, will feature “five groups of called balconette bras, high-cut briefs, G-strings, garters, bustiers and fitted corsolettes rendered in leopard-print satin with eyelash lace detail, red satin with delicate black lace trim and black lace with intricate ribbon detailing and signature Dita blue treatments. There will also be spot-pattern mesh overlay effects on nude and black grounds, as well as sexy looking nude and black fishnet,” according to WWD. Read more…

“More feather and rhinestones! Better lighting! Bigger production value! Striptease burlesque was invented in America, so it’s not any different. …  If you read anything Gypsy Rose Lee ever wrote, she liked being called a stripper. That word was used back then. I don’t really need any fancy terminology to describe what I do. I never correct someone when they say, ‘She’s a stripper.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I am.’ I am proud of what I do.”

Dita Von Teese is right, of course. Stripping is stripping. But I also found her explanation overly simplistic. I know several burlesque performers, as well as several strippers, and my impression is that burlesque usually begins as a “past time” or “hobby” that involves spending a lot of money on costumes, shoes, hair and makeup, and it can turn into a full-time job for only a select few. My impression of stripping is that it is a full-time job, or a part-time job during school (or whatever), which women get into out of economic necessity more so than a “hobby.” I do not look down on strippers — in fact, one of my fave Frisky commenters is a former stripper! — but I’m definitely more into watching burlesque! Dita Von Teese To Commit Striptease

“CSI” just got a whole lot edgier. The show has confirmed that burlesque super star Dita Von Teese will guest-star on a January episode of the show. She will play an old-Hollywood, femme fatale type who gets up close and personal (striptease per chance?) with Sanders, played by her real-life friend Eric Szmanda. “Her character is absolutely unlike what she seems. Prepare to be tantalized and tormented,” says the executive producer. Oooh! It’s so “Black Dahlia.” The film noir plot possibilities are endless. I shall be watching. [EW] Keep reading »
