The Gap is usually a go-to for our fall shopping, so we were pleasantly surprised to see this Groupon offer land in our inbox this morning: Sign up for the deal and you’ll only pay $25 for $50 worth of merchandise in stores. For those not familiar with Groupon, it’s a sort of local coupon service where retailers and business owners can offer you a deal, but only if enough people participate (or sign up) for the deal. If the offer goes through, you pay online and print out your certificate. Some of us here at The Frisky have yet to get on board with Foursquare, the mobile “check-in” app that lets others see where you are. If you’re not into using the service to virtually navigate your social life, the company may still appeal to you yet: Foursquare recently announced a discount deal with the Gap. Users who check into Gap locations through August 22 will get 25 percent off their purchase. (If you’ve tried these mobile discount things by waving your iPhone in a clerk’s face and seen their “huh?” reaction, not to worry—the check-in gives you a discount code just in case.) Hold that credit card! Double X excerpted a section from the forthcoming book, Cheap: The High Cost of Discount Culture, by Ellen Ruppell Shell, which reveals the scams at outlet malls are lamer than the kids who hang out in the food court all day.
The author visited at an outlet mall in Las Vegas with a prices and branding expert to scope out the “deals.” At a Crescent jewelry store, the ladies examine an $832 diamond-and-white-gold pendent, marked down from $3,329, which the jewelers are eager to give them “a better price on.” But back at home, Shell does a little googling and discovers the pendent’s diamonds can just barely pass as gemstones according to diamond grades. Plus, nearly identical pendents could be found on eBay for only $229!
Yeah, markups pretending to be markdowns suck. And it’s sneaky that stores selling comparatively-cheap wares at inflated prices are shacking up next to the Barney’s Co Op and La Perla so they look fancier. But…that’s business, isn’t it? Keep reading »
