In the past, Yigal Azrouël and Alexander Wang created beautified wrappers, and this time around it’s Brian Reyes who is lending a print from his pre-spring 2010 collection. Fashion designers and houses love to have their labels plastered on billboards, T-shirts, and handbags. But who knew something as simple as a wrapper could get the fashion world’s attention. United Colors of Benetton joins Alexander Wang, Yigal Azrouël, and Marc Jacobs in the lengthening line of fashion brands that have released condoms. The Benetton condoms are made in Japan by Okamoto Industries, which also manufactures Beyond Seven condoms and automotive interior material. The condoms, which sell for $15.50 for 12, only come in pink and green — not quite all of the united colors, but the wrappers are kind of cute and not sexually explicit. I’m still not sure what batteries have to do with condoms, but maybe the message is that sex with a condom is everlasting and energizing. Up-and-coming designers doing collaborations with Target is becoming too predictable a path to success. Instead, an alternate way to gain name recognition and visibility is to design a line of condoms. Yes, that’s right, designer condoms. Marc Jacobs designed a rubber wrapper on his own, and then last September, Planned Parenthood released a Yigal Azrouël-designed condom wrapper for its Proper Attire line. The Planned Parenthood/designer collaboration is continuing this season with Alexander Wang‘s simple black and white package ($5.99 for 3), which just happen to match his Fall 2009 collection that came down the runway on Feb. 14. Instead, condoms are what you peruse in the drugstore aisle late at night, and the big decision is whether to get Trojans or Durex.
