A Few Of My Favorite Things: M.J. Of EthicalStyle.com

Ethical Style blogger M.J. started her eco-conscious fashion blog three years ago, thinking she knew a lot about ethical fashion. “I was so wrong,” she says. “The scope is so much more broad than just organic cotton and sweatshop labor.” And her interest in ethical fashion extends far beyond clothing manufacture and fabrication. “Right now, I’m particularly interested in the use of Photoshop in advertising, intellectual property laws in design, and designers who care about sourcing animal products humanely (even if they still use hot-button materials like leather and fur).” Check out her awesome, and informative blog, and take a look at some of M.J.’s most favorite things after the jump!

Polyvore’s “IT Bag” Design Contest — Do You Have What It Takes?

Polyvore and Rebecca Minkoff have gotten together to see if you have what it takes to design the next IT bag. The challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to take inspiration from Rebecca’s “Morning After Clutch,” and redesign it. The “MAC” has been worn by celebs such as Reese Witherspoon, Keira Knightley and Shenae Grimes, and is an iconic bag in its own right. All of the elements — hooks, studs, zippers, tassels, feet and leather — are provided for you on the Polyvore site. You just have to put your design together. Ten finalists will be picked by Rebecca herself and the winner will be chosen by user votes on Facebook. The winner will have their bag shown during New York Fashion Week and it will become available for sale in March! So, will you put your creative skills to the test? Keep reading »

Pee-Wee, In The Phone Book

Finally, a new use for the Yellow Pages! Philadelphia artist Alex Querel thought canvas was too dull a medium to work with—so he took to carving phone books to make his photo-realistic portraits of notorious celebs. Says Querel, “In carving and painting a head from a phone directory, I’m celebrating the individual lost in the anonymous list of thousands of names that describe the size of the community. In addition, I like the idea of creating something that is normally discarded every year into an object of longevity.” [Projects Gallery] Keep reading »

Sure, Why Not: Give Uncle Karl An Island To Design

The fashion world is once again spreading rumors that Karl Lagerfeld will retire from Chanel. Why do people care and why does this rumor resurface so often? Because it’s Chanel. And where do you go when you’re already at the top? Since Karl is famous for topping himself year after year with his larger-than-life fashion show productions, the world is waiting for the day he quits—just to see what he’ll do next.

Anyhow. Uncle K hasn’t announced his retirement yet, but he has just taken on an incredible project: designing an island. (An entire island?!) He’s been recruited by an architecture firm and hotel group to create his own little Lagerfeld Land on the man-made Isla Moda off the coast of Dubai. The resort retreat will be made of “luxury hotels, residential villas, spas, lounges and of course, shopping.” Can we go to there? [Hint Mag] Keep reading »
