“Degrassi” is returning to MTV Canada on October 28, and while these days it looks nothing like the previous versions of the show we once knew and loved, it’s still totally reason to celebrate. The original “Degrassi Junior High” series paved the way for the “Degrassi: Next Generation” series I binge-watched in high school, and the addictive saga of overdramatized teen crises still continues today. That school must be cursed, because its students are always facing an impossibly high (some might even say statistically unfathomable) amount of personal issues at any given time. I wouldn’t say the show mishandles teen issues, but it definitely adds its own uniquely overdone flavor to the characters’ plights — and that’s what we love about it. After the jump, 20 gloriously memorable “Degrassi” moments. Keep reading »
Today, I am in a “Harry Potter” hangover. For weeks, there was so much buildup. And while the movie was wonderful, now it’s just … over. So thank goodness that a new pop culture phenomenon begins afresh tonight. Finally, “Degrassi” is back! Now, I have been through my fair share of guilty pleasure TV shows over the years, but “DegrassI: The Next Generation” has been one of the most enduring. For the past 11 seasons, I’ve watched Spinner and Jimmy give way to Emma and Manny, give way to Mia and Peter, give way to Holly J and Declan. The best part of this Canadian teen soap (based on the “Degrassi” series of the ’80s) is watching the young characters you don’t care too much about blossom into almost-adults. For example, Sav has gotten so hot and Claire has become such a fashion plate! And because the show airs telenovela style—there’s a new episode every night—there is absolutely no waiting to see how their new lives evolve.
But I promise there are other things I’m looking forward to this week—like the series premiere of “Entourage” and a new album from They Might Be Giants. After the jump, a rundown of this week’s television, movies, music, and more. Keep reading »
Last night, a two-hour movie called “Degrassi: The Boiling Point” kicked off the show’s six week binge of new episodes. For those of you unfamiliar with “Degrassi,” it’s like “Gossip Girl
” except: it’s Canadian (and it’s been around for yeaaaaars
), the actors on the show are actually 18, the events take place on high school grounds, and the wardrobe choices are far more realistic. Still, “Degrassi” packs more sex and scandal into their episodes than any other teen drama on television. In last night’s special there was a: explosion, a brother-on-sister kiss, a drunken Niagara Falls wedding, a girl fight, a guy fight, and a whole bunch of hookups. So basically—why aren’t you watching this show? Keep reading »
The Degrassi hotties huddled together at the red carpet premiere of their new flick, “Paradise City: Degrassi Goes Hollywood.” Fingers crossed the movie is as action packed with pubescent problems as the tv show. But whatever it takes, I know I can make it through! [Toronto, 8/26/09] Keep reading »
