So, I’ve still been thinking a lot about the New York Times’ assertion that courtship has kicked the bucket. I jotted down some thoughts about that. You can read them here. One point that the piece makes that I agree with is that lots of daters out there — men and women both — are unclear about the difference between a date and a non-date. Let’s review a few “dating experiences” cited in the piece… Keep reading »

dating-donts-canceling-at-date

I find one of the most stressful parts of dating to be the whole “scheduling” thing. When you’re on the dating scene, one thing you learn very quickly is that every person seems to have a different idea of how dates are made … and broken. Because I am a type A, very busy schedule, everything planned, values manners kind of girl, I get bristly when cancelled on rudely or abruptly. A few weeks ago, a bloke sent me a text two hours before our date saying that he couldn’t meet up because “his friend needed him.” Who even knows what that means? Not that I cared. I was just pissed because I could have gone to yoga and I didn’t have my mat with me! I understand that things come up. I’ve even had to cancel dates myself. But there is a proper way to cancel a date with a lady, especially if you intend to see her again in the future. After the jump, some date canceling etiquette for the kind and conscientious man. 5 Ways To Let Me Know It’s A Date

Calling all single menfolk of the world. Hello. Hi. How are you? Good. Great! Can we talk about DATES for a moment? Lately there have been a lot of you dudes banging on my door, asking me to “hang out.” This is a wonderful thing. Only problem is, some of you have dropped the ball on making me aware that it is in fact a date and not a wrap session where two buddies make jokes about farting. It’s fun to make new friends, but it’s more fun to make new friends who might want to rip my clothes off at some point. If you’d like me to consider you as a potential romantic partner, if you’d like me to wear a sexy dress that shows off my gams, if you’d like to receive a smooch (possibly even with tongue!) at the end of the night, there are a few things you can do to clue me into your master plan. After the jump, five ways you can alert me that you’d like to be more than buddies. Keep reading »

How To Ask A Girl Out On A Damn Date

The other night I went on one of the best dates I’ve been on in years. Why? Well, aside from Mark* being sexy, sweet, fun, and considerate, he did something that absolutely knocked my socks off — he took all the hassle out of making plans. God bless this man! Making plans should be easy. But for the past few years of dating, I’ve found it increasingly difficult. Why should it be like pulling teeth? Isn’t dating supposed to be fun? I was starting to think that maybe my expectations were out of line, but Mark restored my faith. He put all those other putzes shame. Mark should travel the world and give seminars about the proper way to ask a girl out on a damn date. But until then, I’ll tell you what he did oh-so-right. Take notes, guys. Keep reading »

Every Guy’s Ideal Valentine’s Day Date Itinerary

Traditionally, Valentine’s Day is treated as a woman’s holiday. This sexist interpretation is due to the whole love-is-for-the-ladies thing that has been a part of American culture for the last hundred years or so. The classic image of the holiday is a man showing up on a woman’s doorstep with flowers and candy, and nearly every Valentine’s Day product out there is marketed toward men on the assumption that they’re the ones doing the buying around the 14th.

At its heart, though, Valentine’s Day is meant for couples, and last time we checked there were two people in a couple (sometimes three, depending on the laws in your state). Men should really enjoy the holiday as much as women, but for whatever reason, they tend to turn against it. Maybe it’s the actual date that makes us so anti-Valentine’s Day.

Here’s a look at an ideal way to spend Valentine’s Day, from a man’s perspective. Keep reading »

You Met Him Where?

Despite the old-fashioned concept that dating and work don’t mix, plenty of women have met their man at work. From restaurants to meat processing plants, you never know when your next job will land you a date. For other women, attending wrestling events, online gaming events, and shopping at the grocery store all resulted in unusual encounters, some which progressed into meaningful relationships. Think twice about going out without putting yourself together, because you never know who you’ll meet.

Handling Valentine’s Day With A Not-So-Serious Boyfriend

Valentine’s Day is the holiday of love (or crass commercialism, depending on whom you talk to). However, things can get a little bit awkward when Feb. 14 rolls around and you’ve been dating someone very casually. There’s a lot of pressure on V-Day to bring a relationship to the next level, but sometimes you’re just not ready for that.

Of course, you could fake your own death. However, you might not have access to a boat and enough dynamite to get the job done correctly. In these rare situations, you’ve got to do what you can to tone down the date itself, in order to avoid any awkwardness. Here are a few tips to help you out. Keep reading »
