10 Signs You May Be An Emotional Tampon

On this week’s episode of the “Savage Love” podcast, a 24-year-old man called in to ask what he should do about his ex who always calls him to talk about her problems, but sometimes his calls or texts will go unanswered for months. He thinks they might get back together, yet it never seems to happen. He’s dating a new woman he really likes, but his ex seems to psychically sense it and has amped up communication. Dan Savage sagely advises the guy to “stop being her emotional tampon.” We’ve all encountered this man before, but until now, I wasn’t aware that there was such a fitting phase for his breed. An “emotional tampon” is a man who will always be there to provide a woman with the proverbial shoulder to cry on and be available for her anytime of the day or night to vent her emotional frustration, problems, and mental instabilities. (Thank you to John DeVore and Urban Dictionary for a more thorough explanation.) Guys, don’t let this bloody fate befall you. After the jump, 10 signs that you may be an emotional tampon. It Gets Better, The Book

When Dan Savage posted the first “It Gets Better” video to YouTube, following the suicides of multiple LBGT teens who faced bullying in school, he likely didn’t expect the overwhelming culture phenomena it became. Since then, the It Gets Better Project has seen over 6,000 YouTube videos posted by people all over the world, offering gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth support and acceptance. Now, the It Gets Better book features a collection of expanded essays and new material from celebrities, everyday people and teens assuring victims of bullying that they are not alone and that it will get better.

What’s The Most Ridiculous Post-Sex Request You’ve Ever Received?

This week’s standout caller on Dan Savage’s “Savage Love” podcast was the kind of guy you hope you never encounter, the kind of dude you hope your son never becomes. This gentleman had recently had sexual relations with a girl in his bed and when she left, he noticed that she had gotten some period blood on his white sheets. He wanted Dan’s opinion on whether it was her responsibility to replace them. The kicker? They were flannel sheets. Not 800-thread count Egyptian cotton. Flannel. Sigh. Keep reading »

What Does It Mean For A Relationship To “Work”?

My Tuesday evening ritual consists of the following: an hour and a half of yoga and meditation, followed by a hot bubble bath, in which I either drink a glass of wine or eat a Haagen-Daz Coffee Crunch ice cream bar, while wearing a mud mask and lisening to Dan Savage‘s Savage Love podcast. I highly recommend this entire evening routine. It makes the following day, Hump Day, that much easier. Keep reading »

Dan Savage May Be Coming To MTV

My very favorite sex advice columnist and founder of the “It Gets Better Project,” Dan Savage, may be a new staple on MTV. Entertainment Weekly reports that he is currently working on a pilot where he goes to college campuses, fields questions about sex, dating, and relationships, and doles out his unique brand of no-nonsense advice. If his TV show is even half as entertaining as his weekly “Savage Love” podcast, it should be a huge hit. I’m thinking “Love Line” for the aughts, but way more LGBT-friendly. It really does get better. [EW] Keep reading »

Hero Of The Day: An “It Gets Better” Video You’ve Got To See

We’ve been hearing a lot about Dan Savage’s incredible “It Gets Better” campaign — and we’re sure you’ve seen tons of “It Gets Better” videos. But this clip from Fort Worth City Councilman Joel Burns is especially moving. In the 10-minute video, Burns eloquently talks about the private pain he felt growing up as a gay teen in Texas. Burns goes on to tell his audience that “even though there may be some political repercussions for telling my story, this story is not just for the adults who might choose or not choose to support me. This story is for the young people who may be holding that gun tonight, or the rope or the pill bottle.” Burns’ story, from one of the most unlikely places, is a prescient and moving gift to gay teens everywhere. “Savage Love” Sex Column Might Become A Show On HBO

Dan Savage, sex advice columnist extraordinaire, recently blogged that he is shooting a pilot this Thursday for a possible HBO show based on his column, “Savage Love.” The idea of the show is to examine current events and cultural trends through the lens of sex, he explained. Guess HBO just doesn’t feel right with “Sex and The City” gone, huh? Keep reading »

How Long Should You Wait Before Getting Engaged?

My favorite sex and relationship columnist, Dan Savage, is now on Nerve and a few days ago he tackled a question from a woman who revealed she started talking marriage with her boyfriend three months into their relationship. Savage balked at this admission. His response, after the jump…
