Have you been watching “Savage U” on MTV? You should be! Frankly, I think the show should be required viewing for teens and college students, as Dan both hilariously and empathetically delivers some of the best and most straightforward sex and dating advice ever seen on TV or elsewhere. The first time I heard Dan (we’re on a first name basis), on his “Savage Love” podcast, talk about the importance of being “GGG” (“Good, Giving and Game”) in a relationship, my mind was kind of blown. So simple, but it encapsulates the exact dynamic I want to share with a partner. So it’s not come as any surprise to me that the advice he’s given on “Savage U” — airing Tuesdays at midnight on MTV — is just as straightforward and spot-on. Here are five bits of advice I especially loved. [MTV] Keep reading »

Hot Links: Dan Savage Labeled A “Bully” & Experts Conclude The Tanning Mom Is, Duh, Tanorexic

  • My BFF Dan Savage has been labeled a “bully” because he went on a rant about ignoring the “bullshit in the Bible about gay people,” and while he apologizes for calling a person who walked out of this speech “a pansy ass,” he stands by his other comments. [Newser]
  • Star says that Angelina Jolie discovered Brad Pitt’s “secret stash” of love letters from another woman, but the most shocking thing about this tabloid story is that they’re not claiming the other woman is Jennifer Aniston. [Celeb Dirty Laundry]
  • I love the message behind Christy Turlington’s “No Mother’s Day” campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the fact that a woman dies every 90 seconds from pregnancy and childbirth complications. [Celebrity Baby Scoop] Keep reading »

Frisky Q&A: Dan Savage Talks About “Savage U,” And The Prevalence Of Birth Control Use And Slut-Shaming On College Campuses

Tonight at 11 p.m. is the premiere of MTV’s “Savage U,” the half-hour series in which Dan Savage, sex advice columnist and founder of the It Gets Better Project, travels to 12 colleges and universities across the country and talks to young folks about sex and relationships. Given his experience — he’s been doling out straight-forward advice for 20 years — and hilariously honest approach, “Savage U” is sure to have a refreshing, entertaining, and most of all important impact on the way mainstream television addresses sex and dating. I was lucky enough to talk to Dan about the show, what most surprised him about the sex lives of college students, and whether he thinks he’ll still be dishing it out in another 20 years. Check out our Q&A after the jump! Keep reading »

I love Dan Savage for a number of reasons. Among them, the “It Gets Better” campaign and the dumb but true advice that “every relationship fails until the one that doesn’t.” Aside from that, I love Dan because he offers smart, non-judgmental advice about sex and relationships, but will totally tell his readers if they’re doing something stupid (see also: DTMFA). So I’m really excited to see Dan in action — so to speak — on the new MTV show “Savage U.” “Savage U” follows Dan and producer Lauren Hutchins0n as they travel around college campuses answering embarrassing and need-to-know questions. You might not be in college, but chances are, you still want to know if a guy can tell if you’re faking an orgasm, right? (Debuts April 3 at 11 p.m. EST.)  [MTV]

Bullied Teen, Who Once Made An “It Gets Better” Video, Commits Suicide

Heartbreaking news: a teen who once made a video for the “It Gets Better” Project committed suicide yesterday after dealing with ongoing harassment because of his sexual orientation. Jamey Rodemeyer, 14, of Buffalo, NY, had been questioning his sexuality for some time and recently blogged: “I always say how bullied I am, but no one listens. What do I have to do so people will listen to me?” Apparently, Jamey’s family was aware of the harassment he faced from classmates and were working with Williamsville North High School officials as best they could to help him; his mom said he had “issues” for years and that he was seeing a social worker and therapist. This Couple’s Sex Life Is WAY Hotter Than Yours

I was scrolling through some questions on Dan Savage’s Savage Love advice column and came across this one:

“You probably get this question every day. I’m a man who loves it when my girlfriend f**ks me with a strap-on. Another great thing: My girlfriend ejaculates frequently and plentifully when we have sex, and she has done so when she’s pegging me. Which leads to my question: What are the possible issues from getting female ejaculate in your ass? I am thinking about modifying a toy in a way that might enable her to squirt up my ass. It probably won’t work, but I am going to try. Because if it does work…”

The other day, I was talking to one of my lesbian friends about the difference between gay and straight relationships. “Being a straight woman, who may want to get married someday, means I have to entertain the notion of having a nonmonogamous marriage,” I argued.

“Why?” she challenged me. (I get this reaction a lot. Especially from women, gay or straight, who tend to get defensive when I say something to this effect.)

“Not to consider it would mean I’m in denial,” I replied. Keep reading »

Dan Savage’s First Visit To A Gay Bar Was Like An Airplane Taking Off

“[The first gay bar I went to] was called the Bushes … My first ‘real’ boyfriend took me. I was too young to be in a bar—and too naive to be in a gay bar—but bars didn’t card people then like they do now. I’m pretty sure I wasn’t the only 17-year-old boy in that bar that night. It was dark, it was dirty. But it was a public place—the first public place where I ever kissed a guy … I don’t remember much else about the place—but I do remember what I had to drink (a Long Island Iced Tea, I’m embarrassed to say), and I do remember what it felt like to walk into the Bushes for the first time. I had spent all day, every day, for the last six years trying to hide my homosexuality from my family, from my friends, from strangers on the street and on the L. The pressure was so intense that I’m surprised I didn’t crack. To step through that door and feel that pressure lift made me feel lightheaded. It was like stepping through an airlock; I’m surprised my ears didn’t pop. The Bushes was the first place I’d ever been where everyone was gay, where being gay wasn’t something that set you apart.”

Dan Savage remembers his first time at a gay bar. And look at him now. He has affected so much change in his community. He and his husband, Terry, were the Grand Marshals of the NYC Pride Parade yesterday, which was especially awesome because of the gay marriage law passing about 36 hours before. Girl Talk: Failure To Squirt

Some things you should know about squirting. Read More »

“Most unusual sexual experience?” I asked my man as I was straddling him in bed one evening. This may sound like a strange line of questioning, but we like to give each other intimate interviews. It is part of our oddly arousing foreplay.

“A squirter,” he answered.

“Really!?’ I asked, as if he were telling me he sees dead people.

“Yeah, every single time we did it, she squirted.” Keep reading »

Is There A Sex Toy Double Standard?

I have … hold on, let me count … five vibrators. While I don’t flaunt them — i.e., they’re not laying out on my bedside table for guests to ogle — I don’t pretend not to have them. I am an empowered woman! I masturbate! I am the master of my own orgasm! Roar! Or rather, purrrrr

But I gotta admit, if a dude I liked confessed to using a sex toy, like, say, a Fleshlight, to masturbate, I would be weirded out. It’s hypocritical, no doubt, but I’m not alone. Am I part of a sex toy double standard? Keep reading »
