American Apparel has made a pretty penny on the backs of its risque marketing campaigns, which feature barely clad “real” models in all sorts of sexy poses and situations. But the British Advertising Standards Authority (BASA) isn’t having any of it, and has warned Dov Charney’s company that they need to tone it down or face censure.
This week, Dakota Fanning turned all of 18 years old. Remarkably, so is Courtney Stodden — just some food for thought, if you will, because age is the only thing the two have in common. Dakota’s fresh, preternatural approach to style may have fallen to the back burner since her younger sister’s debut, but I’m bringing back Dakota. Dakota Fanning’s Cosmopolitan cover raised some eyebrows because the “Twilight” actress is 17-years-old and we all know your hymen magically becomes open for business at midnight on your 18th birthday. Presumably, Cosmo‘s ad sales department knew this fact, which is why it sent out a sample mock-up cover to advertisers scrubbed of all the naughty stuff. The sample mock-up cover (at left) received by the NY Observer newspaper promises articles on “Spring Clothes, Hair, Nails” and how to “Feel Close After A Fight.” The actual cover (at right)? Sex! That’s the question some may ask upon discovering that 17-year-old Dakota Fanning is on the cover of the sort of raunchy women’s magazine next to headlines like “Um, Vagina, Are You Okay Down There?” and “His Best Sex Ever.” The actress — who turns 18 next month — is introduced inside the mag with the headline, “Welcome To Your Cosmo Years, Dakota,” which I guess means she’s on the precipice of adding words like “manhood” to her everyday vernacular, using her thong as a hair tie during oral sex, and taking terrible sex advice? Ugh, growing up sucks. [NY Mag]
“As far as I’m concerned, there’s a no-closet-sharing policy, but as far as Elle is concerned … I’ll go in my room, and there will be clothes on the floor, clothes missing, clothes that are now in her closet. Last summer, I was in London working on a film, and I was looking online and these pictures came up on my homepage. She was in my hat, my dress, my shoes. I called her up and was like, ‘I caught you! They photographed you wearing all my stuff. Put it back!’ … She hung up on me! She didn’t care at all.”

Siblings — we’ve all got ‘em! Well, most of us at least. I don’t know if you know this, but even celebrities have siblings. In fact, some of our favorite female celebrities happen to have equally cool sisters. They’re not always equal in fame quotient, but that’s okay — they make up for it in other ways.
Dakota Fanning started NYU this fall — but she’s not living like your regular freshman. Instead of living in the dorms on campus, the “Twilight” star is renting out a two-bedroom, two-bathoom, $8,400/month apartment. Not too shabby, right?
The place boasts a kitchen with top-of-the-line appliances, soaking tub and a ton of windows. The building also has a 24-hour doorman and sundeck with panoramic views of the city. No word on if she’s got a roomie, but the building reportedly has at least one other famous tenant: John Mayer.
