“Punk’d,” panda edition: Ai Hin, a female bear living at the Chengdu panda preserve in China, had animal researchers thinking she was pregnant. She couldn’t pee on a stick or anything, but Ai Hin had shown a surge of hormones and had been laying about even more than usual for a panda. A pregnancy is joyous news, of course, as there are less than 2,000 pandas in the world and the bears are notoriously difficult to breed. But now researchers say a wily Ai Hin may have been faking her pregnancy for special treatment. Pregnant pandas move on to air conditioned private rooms and are given extra bamboo and fruit — and Ai Hin milked it. “Some clever pandas have used this to their advantage to improve their quality of life,” a researcher told Xinhua news agency. In response, a live broadcast of the panda childbirth has been canceled. Maybe Ai Hin just had cold feet, er, ovaries? In any case we have to be real here: pandas, 1; humans, 0. If I were in this cat’s shoes, I can’t promise I wouldn’t do the exact same thing.
The cinematic masterpiece that is sure to be “Fifty Shades Of Grey” is still a long way off (February 2015) but you can get your kinky sex fix now with … wait for it, kittens. Yes, the erotic love affair of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey is reenacted by teeny-weeny beh beh kittehs (and their cat toys). Whoever wrote the puns in one deserves the cat video equivalent of an Oscar.
In light of Robin Williams’ passing on Monday, The Gorilla Foundation reminded the world that the actor touched more than just human hearts with his talent and kindness. Back in 2001, Williams met famed gorilla Koko, who communicates using sign language, and the pair instantly connected. Above is video of their first meeting, which Williams called “unforgettable.” Gorilla Foundation president, and Koko’s foster mother, Dr. Penny Patterson said, “Koko, like us, can sense a person’s nature and in this case, she was quickly drawn to Robin’s warm heart.” Upon learning of Williams’ death from suicide, Patterson communicated the news to Koko, who, according to a press release sent to Buzzfeed, “became very somber, with her head bowed and her lip quivering.” Meanwhile, I am reduced to a puddle of tears. I vaguely remember being a toddler taking baths with my older brother and I recall lotsa splashing and crying. These bear cubs are the very picture of good hygiene, and behavior, as they sit in a row and groom. Their mama bear must be very proud. [Laughing Squid]
As my mom and my brother and everyone who has been in my life for the last eight years can probably tell you, I totally project my desire for — and lack of — children onto my dog Lucca. I treat her like she is my (spoiled rotten) kid, giving her whatever she wants, showering her with praise and cuddles, and conversing with her as if she possesses the growing intelligence of a human child. So while others may look at Jan and Chase Renegar, above, as being totally, hilariously batshit nuts for recreating an entire cutesy baby photoshoot with their Jack Russell terrier Snuggles, I see them as raising the bar for dedicated dog parents such as myself. How have I never thought of doing something like this before? Lucca would look so adorable all tucked inside a bird’s nest, Anne Geddes-style… (Click through for more funny and squee-worthy pics!)
