Culturista: Your Guide To The Week, From “Jersey Shore” To Lollapalooza

In July, the summer seems so plentiful. There’s plenty of time to learn to sail and ride bikes in the park. But today is August 1—the date when, every year, I start feeling like summer is slipping through my fingertips, like the metaphorical sand I haven’t used to build a sandcastle. So my number one priority for this week is to spend as much time as possible outdoors. My second priority? To enjoy this week’s crop of movies, music and television. Hey, they are just as lovely as a long nap in a hammock.

After the jump, the shows, albums, flicks, and more you won’t want to miss this week. Keep reading »

Let’s face it: keeping up with pop culture is difficult. With more than 1000 channels worth of TV shows, not to mention a new flood of movies and music every week, it’s practically a full-time job to keep up with everything. Luckily, it is my full-time job. So after the jump, your cheat sheet of the TV shows you need to watch, the albums you need to hear, the movies you need to see, and much, much more this week. Culturista: Your Guide To The Week, From “Degrassi” To “Friends With Benefits”

Today, I am in a “Harry Potter” hangover. For weeks, there was so much buildup. And while the movie was wonderful, now it’s just … over. So thank goodness that a new pop culture phenomenon begins afresh tonight. Finally, “Degrassi” is back! Now, I have been through my fair share of guilty pleasure TV shows over the years, but “DegrassI: The Next Generation” has been one of the most enduring. For the past 11 seasons, I’ve watched Spinner and Jimmy give way to Emma and Manny, give way to Mia and Peter, give way to Holly J and Declan. The best part of this Canadian teen soap (based on the “Degrassi” series of the ’80s) is watching the young characters you don’t care too much about blossom into almost-adults. For example, Sav has gotten so hot and Claire has become such a fashion plate! And because the show airs telenovela style—there’s a new episode every night—there is absolutely no waiting to see how their new lives evolve.

But I promise there are other things I’m looking forward to this week—like the series premiere of “Entourage” and a new album from They Might Be Giants. After the jump, a rundown of this week’s television, movies, music, and more. Keep reading »

Culturista: Your Guide To The Week, From “Horrible Bosses” To The End Of “Friday Night Lights”

I don’t know about you, but I sure am feeling refreshed after having July 4th off. Still, even though it’s a short week, so much is happening in the pop culture universe. Some of the most exciting happenings of this week: the series finale of “Friday Night Lights,” which makes me sad because I honestly could have watched this show for another five years; the release of “Horrible Bosses,” which, in addition to “Bridesmaids,” could make this one of the funniest summers on record; and the sequel to Push landing on bookstore shelves, which lets us know what happens to Precious about 10 years later.

After the jump, this week’s television, movies, and music plus much, much more. Keep reading »
